I want to thank everyone on this forum for their insight and encouragement. TC my 85lb Shepard Mix had an IMHA relaspe on September 26,2007. His count was 11% with 0 platlets and he could not walk. After 3 transfusions he recovered and is now at home. The vet that saved him was a specialist in Oncology, we live 45 miles form Tampa/St.Pete in a smaller community that does not have an Internal Specialist. I had disagreed with the specialist about his pred reduction, it seemed to quick to me based on the information I read on this Forum and Meshia's Hope site. TC had his blood draw on 12/20, his RBC was 34down from 39 on 12/4 and he was on 10mg eod. The specialist told me to stop the pred, he was fine and bring him back in a month for another blood draw. I did not stop the pred, but reduced to 5 mg eod and made an appointment in St.Pete with an internal specialist who specializes in IMHA/AIHA. We saw her this week and she recommends keeping TC on the 10 mg eod for 2 more weeks to see if we can get higher than the 34. She also did a check of his other functions which had not been done before, his liver enzymes are slightly elavated, I am going to continue the milk thistle, but everything else looks good. On his next visit she will do a test (don't remember the name) to see how hard his bone marrow is having to work to regenerate. I feel 100% better, she is very caring and took her time talking to me and called me back promptly after his blood test results were in. Because TC has to be muzzled to do anything I hate taking him to a new vet, he is fine after he knows them but is very difficult at first. I would not have had the confidence to seek a second opinion, new vet if it were not for this forum...Thank you all!!

Wendy, I think we all used to feel that way, why would we question our Vets/Dr.s? After being on this site for the last year and a half I find myself researching a lot of things I would just have accepted at one time. Glad to hear TC is doing well. Keep us posted. Penny

Deeann, I am so sorry to hear about your dog being diagnosed. This is a wonderful site, lot's of good information. My specialist is Dr.Kelli Weaver at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists. 727-535-3600, they have a web site also. I really like Dr.Weaver, her own dog has IMHA, so she has experienced it from a personal and professional standpoint. They know all about IMHA/AIHA and can tranfuse & crossmatch blood. There are a couple of internal med specialists there, but she is great. Hope this helps, best to you & your baby.
