Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - sarcoptic mites

I am having a stress reaction just being back on this site again, after having lost my sweet Tibetan Terrier, Barkley, to IMHA in August a couple of years ago, after many weeks of fighting, eight blood transfusions, and many thousands of dollars in veterinary costs. This site became my involuntary but beloved "family", as we all struggled, celebrated, and mourned together. I have now just adopted a rescue Afghan Hound, transported from Korea, where he was surrendered to a shelter totally without any hair/fur, and resided for a year before an Afghan lover found him and connected him to a rescue home in the U.S. The rescue folks paid for his transport from Korea and all of his veterinary care. I have had him for a week and he is an absolute love...but I just learned that some of his rescue mates have been found to have sarcoptic mites. To some this might be a frustration (not about the home...these things can happen in the rescue world) but just having to deal with the implications of resolving the problem in a multi-pet home. For me, however, I began panicking when I learned that the standard treatments for the animals and the home include insecticides and things such as Frontline, Revolution, Ivermectin, Interceptor, etc., nightmare terms in the world of IMHA! All of my dogs are long-haired breeds (Afghan, Tibetan Terrier, Lhasa-mix) and I know I have to treat them...but I am terrified! Any suggestions/alternatives would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks and blessings to all. Please respond to my elphaba@clearwire.net address, rather than the one that this entry was sent from.

Cheryl,
I am so sorry to hear this turn of events. Sarcoptic mange is a very serious condition and usually does require these lengthy treatments. It can be a life threatening condition for ill dogs so vets don't usually mess around with less than the most aggressive treatments.

This is a very difficult task for you to accept, especially with other animals in your household. You can also get them on yourself, though they prefer dogs and don't stay long on humans.

I think it this were me, I might try to find a way to have the dog in hospital for the most intensive part of the treatments. At least I would know it is quarantined and well cared for during this.

Here are a couple of links. Marvistavet doesn't always work well with vetnet. You may have to copy and paste that address in a new window.
