Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Sami

Sami's Red blood cell count has increased slightly but now there is a concern about an increase in his white cells especially the lymphacytes? He was given a 4Dx Snap test which came up negative. He now is scheduled for an ultrasound Monday morning hopefully to rule out lymphoma at one vet clinic and a consult appointment with yet another vet who specializes in AIHA. I will definitely bring up the possibility of Ehrlichiosis (Thank you Patrice) with her as the snap test may have been a false negative. His weight is dropping dramatically and he no longer wants to eat his kibble so I've been cooking up chicken and hamburger so much for an increase in appetite from the steroids. I appreciate everyone's input, thoughts and prayers.

Sue,
Yes, there can be a false negative. The premier lab for diagnosing tick disease in the US is Protatek Labs.

Click on "download forms" for contact info. Dr. Holland is always amenable to taking calls from vets who need to know what they should request test wise due to the symptoms and the location where the dog lives. Be sure you get the exact information about shipping across the border. They will stop blood products unless they are labeled correctly.

Have you done any traveling in the past 6 months? Have they been treating with doxycycline just in case?

An ultrasound is also an excellent diagnostic tool to determine if there are any unusual growths causing the high white cells and other problems.

Use any foods you can to encourage him to eat. A big fav in our house is scrambled eggs cooked in a little butter.

I will be thinking about Sami this weekend.
