Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Roxy is Home!!!!

After a very very long and horrible week of having Roxy at the hospital she is finally home!!! Monday has to have been the most heart-renching day of our lives,we saw our Roxy almost lifeless with a PCV count of only 17% that required her to get a blood transfusion which later had to be stopped because she was reacting badly to it. As my husband posted Tuesday morning she was vomiting and had turned jaundice, at that point her doctor was almost positive it was AIHA. She was put on pretnosone which helped her PCV levels get to 35% but she still wasnt eating and whats worse, her heart rate was only 60bpm. Wednesday she had an ECG done and was tested for Adisons to see what would explain the low heart rate, the good news was that she was eating baby food for us!!! That was the most precious sight for these weepy eyes! It gave us hope and reassured us that Roxy was going to make it. Thursday she was eating chicken and the techs were all laughing at her for barking at her doctor whenever she was near. The Adisons test came back negative which was great news but we still dont know what is causing the low heart rate. Today her heart rate was at 96bpm which is so much better but we are still waiting to hear back from a cardiologist. Any idea what would cause the low heart rate???

She is home though!!! Her PCV levels are stable for now. She is on pretnosone and cyclosporine. We have to go back on Monday for a checkup but her doctor says that she is doing phenominally. We are so thankful to have met Dr.Anielski and the staff at VCA Central, they went out of their way to make sure that Roxy got the treatments she needed. Thank you to all of you for your support during this hard week. Please keep us in your prayers. I pray that you are all having a blessed week.

I am glad you have your little girl home. I don't think I have read of anyone having a low heart rate with this disease so hopefully the cardiologist will figure it out. Keep us posted.
