Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Rosie (needs prayers)

well vet visit not so great today down to a pcv of 15. all we can do now is hope that the pred kicks in before its too late. Also upping the biopreparation she is on, as I still feel that is what helped her in the beginning. Its sad to think that a dog who is active and eating well can be so sick. I hope my next post will be good news, but as its looking now I really dont know. Just keep praying for her..

Thanks guys

Pam,
I am so sorry to hear about Rosie. This is such hard news to hear. I will be thinking about both of you all day.

Are you seeing a specialist? This might be an important step to take right now if you have not done so. Your vet may have someone they work with at a local specialist clinic on a regular basis. This may require a bit more in the way of special diagnostics.

Do not give up hope, there are special protocols available that can be very effective.

Oh Pam.....HUGS for ya. I hate seeing people have to go through this. It's just such a hard thing to deal with.

You'll have to refresh my mind cause I can't remember....if Rosie on thyroid supplements? Pet tinic? Have you considered (or can afford) anabolic steroid injections? Acupuncture? Cyclosporine?

Too bad you couldn't add cyclosporine. Go with 5 days on it and then 2 days off...then repeat. Seems to be one of the better treatments when bone marrow failure is involved.

I'm with Patrice in that a specialist would be a handy tool right about now. I know the funds are low but what about consulting Dr. Dodd's through email. Maybe she can give you some advise.

I'll say some extra special prayers just for Rosie. Healing vibes coming her way as well.

Dear Pam,

So very sorry to hear this latest update on Rosie.
I agree that consulting a specialist is a good idea right now, particularly because Rosie has become non-regenerative.
Maybe soloxine for thyroid would be something to consider? It has worked well for other non-regenerative dogs.... has Rosie had a thyroid panel run?
Are you considering a blood transfusion if her PCV drops any lower?

Our thoughts are with you both,

Sam & Millie.

Dear Pam,

I am so sorry your girl is not doing well..... I am with everybody that already mentioned thyroid check, specialist, Dr. Dodds. Stay positive she has beatin it once she can do it again!

We are sending lots of prayers and positive vibes your way! Wit a big Canadian bear hug,

Sending my prayers for Rosie. Please list the med's she is on, the dosages and how much she weighs. If she is not on Cyclosporine I would ask your vet about it. It was the one drug that really helped Ginger. I know it is hard starting over with all the med's but stay strong and don't give up, Rosie can make it through again you just have to get her on the right med's and give them time to work.

Keep us updated

Thanks.. She is currently on .7 of Predizone and I'm upping her dose of Bio-preparation to 3pills a day in hopes of seeing a turn a round. I am not able to afford any further testing. Which is killing me, but I know Rosie has had a wonderful life and has many friends in Heaven to run and play with. If it should come to that. I'm really hopeful that the meds will start to take effect. It look her a few weeks last time to see a turn around, I just hope we have the time. I can't do another transfusion. The strange part is she acts like a healthy pup. She's tired, but she has always been a tired type dog. She is first to her food bowl every morning and chasing the squirrels and invisible animals in the yard every day..So aside from a blood test telling me she's sick, you sure wouldnt know it.

Pam, when you say 0.7 pred do you mean 0.7mg of pred daily? I can't help but think that this is very low for a 10-15 pound dog (is she still in this range?).

Do you have copies of the past several blood tests??? I'd be curious as to the results of the CBC's if this is what you had done.

YOu never mentioned if she was on thyroid supplements or not.

oops guess its .7 twice a day.. so three .5mg a day..nope they have never given me any of the results. I need to ask for those I guess. they normally just tell me the pcv results and im on my way.. no thyroid supplements. I guess they know that I dont have the funds to do much more than what I'm doing. So far she is acting quite normal. So I'm praying that her stats are improving not getting worse. fingers crossed. I dont know how fast a count can go down.. it was about 5 numbers in two weeks..so im going off of that for now.. going back hopefully in a week to recheck. i keep waking up in the middle of the night just to check breathing. its like im back to having my kids again..but totally worth it to know she's okay for now.
