Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Rosie 4 year old Hotdog IMHA??

Rosie had a PCV count of 8, then got a transfusion, ultrasound and CBC. Her PCV after transfusion was 29, then a week later was at 25 on the CBC. Not showing any new blood cells. She is currently on Pred. and atopica. and is due for a PCV in another week. No real diagnosis has been givin. She is acting totally normal. We found a site that sells Bio- preparation we are hoping that in a week time after being on this, her PCV level will rise.

Pam, hello. I have a dachshund also. His original pcv count when he became ill with IMHA was 9. The good news is that he has since recovered. It has taken actually almost three years for him to be free of all meds. Please know that one transfusion is not always sufficient. My boy required four transfusions within a five month period before he began producing RBC's on his own in addition to treatment via the Pred/atopica. I am glad to hear your girl is acting normal. That is very encouraging! Indeed you must keep a close watch on her cbc count as a transufison may buy 'time' but may not be the cure-all for a condition that may continue on quite a length of time. Many times vets are baffled by the onset of the condition/diagnosis. There could be many reasons why your doxie has contracted this condition.
My doxie began symptoms soon after getting a treatment of Frontline flea control product. I later learned these products have dangerous toxic pesticides not properly regulated by the EPA. Be very cautious of any chemical products or vaccinations that you may think of using on her in the future. This is a tough battle to fight and you must be in her corner to protect her.
Wishing you the very best. Jan

Pam,

Sorry to hear you have to go through this disease but glad to hear Rosie is doing ok... My dog needed a few transfusion and it took about 1 month before the medication kicked in for her PVC to rise on its own. After 7 months Madison is now drug free.

Sending you both positve thoughts ans well wishes.

I too am sorry you and your pup are going through this. You have found a site that will give you tremendous information and support during this ordeal. The bio-prepartion is very good, but understand you won't necessarily get results in just a week. I say this because I don't want you to be upset or give up if the counts don't change drastically in one week. Sometimes it takes time. I think it is awesome stuff. My pup has been on it for 1 1/2 months give or take a few and I believe it has helped a great deal in keeping him "clinically" in good shape through this disease. His PCV's and retics aren't the best, but he is still eating, energy ok, etc. I wish you and your pup all the best during this crisis. We are here for you. Keep us posted.

Pam, we also have a dachshund, Holly, when diagnosed her PCV was also 8 and received 1 transfusion. Holly's PCV did not rise that much though, it took a long time to rise and was also started on Pred & Atopica. She was diagnosed March 2007 and on August 18 we stopped the pred, but now she is having other problems. Doxies are tough little fighters, but just be prepared because it might be a long battle, but so worth it!
