Robin,

I don't know if prednisone can cause restlessness, but my first thought was Jack needs to go out. High doses of prednisone makes a dog very thirsty and therefore he has to go pee a lot. I remember sleeping on the couch downstairs, so I did not have to go down the stairs in the middle of the night. He basically had to go out every 2 hours. I know you live on the second floor, so that makes it hard. Just something to consider.
I have always given the prednisone with Kahlu's food, morning and evening, 2 equal doses.
As for food, low fat no grain seems to be the best.

Robin:

Yes, restlessness can be a side effect of the pred. As for being picky - I know a lot of people have tried baby food to help a picky eater. Be sure to look for baby food without onion/onion powder in it. Once your dog has been on pred for a little while you'll discover he's ravenous and will eat anything. Pred has a tendency to increase their appetite.

Rita -
That is the problem he has been on Pred for almost 3 months. He had a great appetite in the beginning but now he is picky. I don't understand!!

Brigitte is right on target. As many have already said here Prednizone has many side effects of varing degrees with each of our dogs. Two months into this Jack should be more listless than restless. When Cooper was on the high dosages he didn't know where he was or for that matter what he was. In the early phases we always had a supply of boiled rice and chicken breasts to mix with his kibble. If even OK to have him eat severel smaller meals a day if its to his liking. Also we made sure that he had access to water at all times. As others have said here his meds are creating a tremendous thirst, and of course what goes in must come out. When Cooper was on high dosages of Pred he had to pee constantly. If he stood still it would drain out into a puddle in seconds. If he tried to walk he would leave a trail. A large mop and bucket were in use throughout the day. At night I slept with him for 4 1/2 months in the family room with me on the couch and him on assorted beach towels scattered about the floor. Throughout the night we went out every two hours and yet he still soaked every towel that he layed on. The side effects of these meds are horrendous and yet it is the only way. Robin each and every one of us is at or has been were you are with this disease. The information, education, and support of this forum is awesome. Make sure you read carefully each post concerning Jack and then go back and reread all of the responses again and again. Our state of anxiety misses much the first time around. Don't hesitate to ask any question or make any observation or express your feelings, here at the forum. Help will always be just around the corner. The very best to you and to Jack this coming week.

Robin,

When Tasha was sick she was also very picky when she hadn't been before. We tried boiled chicken or steamed fish mixed with rice. These two were just about the only things she would eat. I did try beef and rice but that didn't seem to work as well. As far as the fish we used, we generally stayed with some sort of white fish or salmon. OH, we did try and serve the meals to her warm.
