Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Reposted for Isa

Isa, Miami, Iisla91@ymail.com

Hi everyone!... I am so grateful to have found this site!.... Today is exactly a week as well that my pet Toby was diagnosed with IMHA. He had two blood transfusions and on Thursday they sent him home because the doctor says there isn't much she can do considering that he dosent want to eat. I thought bringing home was gonna make him feel better. The doctor said of he continued throwing up there isn't much we can do for him. So far he hasn't been throwing up. He docent have appetite though, he is very thirsty and his stomach is bloated. I'm worried for him because is breathing is very rapidly. He is cold and shaking do you know of anything I can do to makehim feel better

Isa,
If your vet has given up and you have not, it is clearly time to find a new one! To have a knowledgeable vet on board is essential in this fight. I urge you to find an internal medicine specialist or go to an emergency clinic. Here is a website that you might find helpful:

Make sure you go to the success stories page. These stories will give you lots of information and hope.
Please post all the medications Toby is on. What is his breed, his weight? Do you have any of the test results that were done? What tests were done? Ultrasound, tick panel, X-rays? Toby is feeling tired because he has not enough red blood cells transporting oxygen. That is why he is breathing heavily. Him being cold is a bit unusual and concerns me. Usually dogs are hot with the steroids they are on. The thirst is a side effect of the medications and absolutely normal. Make sure he has plenty of clean water available. Feed him low fat food. The best you can afford. Boiled fish or chicken, mixed with veggies and sweet or yellow potatoes is a great food.
Please keep us updated how Toby is doing,

Brigitte - Being cold is a result of the anemia. Beau shivered constantly prior to diagnosis and I always felt bad - in hindsight - that I didn't pick up on this.

Sharon,
interesting... but I guess that makes sense. For us it came on so quick, that this did not happen. But I would think that after a week of prednisone (hopefully a high enough dose) Toby would feel hot? I am more thinking that he might have a fever?

Isa,
please don't wait, go get advice from an other vet! Toby is in the early stages of this disease and it is VERY important that he is on the right dose of the right medications! The destruction of the blood cells has to be stopped asap. People on this forum can give you a lot of tips and ideas, but this can never replace a vet who sees your dog and his blood work.

Best wishes, Brigitte
