Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Remembering our Friends and Theirs

I was gently reminded today that I have a good friend who lives with (and has lived with, for many, many years) an elderly dog; the dog is not doing well, and the friend is deliberating, day to day, whether it's time for her to say "see you soon" to Maggie.

I have another friend who had to put down his 14 1/2-year old black Lab (Lucy), the most spoiled (aka/pampered) (and, heck, do I know how to spoil/pamper a dog WITHOUT letting it grow fat?) the Friday before Thanksgiving because Luce had developed irreversible liver cancer. And, I have a third friend (and, folks, I don't have that many friends!) whose six-year-old Aussie/Border Collie mix died of bladder stones the Monday after Thanksgiving.

While we watch our dogs struggling with AI/IMHA,let's pause to give thanks that Meisha and all who went before and who have gone after her, with Joanne's help, have given our pups and us hope. No one can stop an elderly dog from dying. Unless immediate veterinary care (and, I mean "IMMEDIATE", no one can stop a dog from dying from immediate-onset bladder stones). No doubt AIHA is a curse - the kind of curse I would not (witch that I am) "spell" on any of my worst enemies.

But, it is also a blessing. It gives us pause to remember how much a blessing our dogs are to us: we humans often say, "I value my dog because he/she gives me unconditional love." I value my dogs because they teach me how to give unconditional love.

I'm still a student - and all the dogs, Meisha, Lucy, Sierra, and Maggie and ALL the dogs whose "owners" are on this forum - are my mentors, my teachers.

Please, in our quest to find a cure for Ai/IMHA, let's not forget to find a "cure" for every other early-onset cause of a dog's death.
