Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Questions for Josh/Sway

Josh

Thanks so much for this info about anabolic steroid will get onto that right away.Hopefully can get those here in UK.A few questions for you if you don't mind...
Could I ask did Sway have non regenerative anaemia in bone marrow i.e pure red cell aplasia?
Also did you have problem of getting blood that was compatible after a few transfusions as that is problem we are having with Nollaig and she has had 4 now, last transusion vet had to test compatibility with 14 dogs before we found a match?
I see that you live in California where Dr Dodds is based did you attend her directly with Sway or did she just work along with your vet?I presume you found her very knowledgeable and helpful?
How is Sway now?

Thanks and take care

Kathleen-
She did have non-regenerative anemia in the bone marrow (or what seemed like it) for almost a year...
She had her marrow tapped and everything,
As far as blood compatability, Hemopet offers UNIVERSAL donor blood and as far as I am aware they did not do any strenuous blood matching.
Dr. Dodds is based out here and luckily she has personally met Sway numerous times but even if you are not in the area feel free to email her as she is a very helpful/knowledgeable leader in these conditions.

Sway currently not only has AIHA but she also has multiple internal liver shunts so she is in a rough spot...
But as far as her Red Blood cell count is about 23% and has been holding in that area (18-26%) for a very long time.
She has been regenerating for about the last year, altho they are not fully mature cells, but regeneration has started none the less.

I wish you and your dog the very best.

Could I ask how long into the illness before anabolic steroid tried and how long did it take to regenerate cells in marrow?
What combination of drugs brought about regeneration?
What drugs is Sway on now for her AIHA?
Poor Sway with all her probs but she must be a strong fighter to come through it all!

Kathleen-
The first thing of utmost importance is getting the count to STOP dropping...
If you have a dog that is getting numerous transfusions and his count is going from 30 to below 15 or below 10 in a matter of weeks/days or quicker or even slower...that is your concern and you should try to address this and this only for right now.

My advice to anyone is not to expect it all in any shape or form all together.
This disease is a very complicated thing for some animals so I wouldnt focus on regeneration as much as you just need to get into a space where that count is holding so it then prolongs the animals life which buys you time in order to then try other things via treatment and etc.

From the end of June 2007 through the first week of August 2007 Sway slowly dropped from 29% (came up in her yearly blood panel-was diagnosed) to 12%.
Her first transfusion was given August 9th, 2007.
Over the next 6 weeks she was given 8 blood transfusions because her count was dropping consistently in a matter of days...

We started the Nandrolone (anabolic steroid) on September 22, 2007.
The next week we experienced no drop in the count...
The next month we experienced no drop in the count...
(She went 18 months without needing another transfusion)
Her Retic count began jumping at the start of Nov 2007 which means the marrow is making cells, but her body was not maintaining them because her count was not going up per say-
Over the next 8 months she bounced around from as high as 28% to as low as 16% but it would fluctuate back and forth.

Medication,
Prednisone, some Cyclosporine at times, Soloxine, many diff supplements like B-12, fortiflora etc.
I will email you a link-
