Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Questions about Rimadyl

I just read a comment about Rimadly and other pain meds having a bad effect. Could someone explain more about that and other meds to steer clear of? Juliet was given Rimadyl for pain after her bone marrow test (before Vet confirmed diagnosis). Also what is DGP?

Thanks for any info.

Pat,
This webpage has information not only on Rimadyl (carprofen) but on all other NSAIDs and supplements that can be used for pain management in canines. If you read what is written here, you will see that Rimadyl can be effective but that it also has a history of causing some serious illness in some dogs. There are so many other ways to approach pain relief that might be safer to start with. She covers that on this page. You can spend a day reading everything here.

DGP Dog Gone Pain contains a proprietary variety of herbs and other supplements. There is some spotty research that indicates that some of the ingredients can be helpful for relieving pain of arthritis and in fact if you go to the Arthritis Foundation's website, you will find a guide that explains many of these ingredients. Just note that they refer you to a page about an ingredient and then you sometimes you must click on the common name below in blue to actually read the information. Weird way to set it up...

I have seen these ingredients in supplements used for humans for the same purpose. My major personal complaint is that this stuff is outrageously expensive. If you study the ingredient list and visit your favorite on-line supplement store, you can probably find a blend that is similar but for much less money. I was able to do that.

Thanks for responding Patrice. I think it was OK because Juliet was off the Rimadyl for several days before we started the prednisone.

Do not use previ cox I put a space in there because it blocked me last time I posted about it. Hopefully Joanne won't have to bail me out again. It caused a gastric bleed in my dog less than 24 hours after taking it. Always research any NSAID's for potential side effects. It seems a lot will indicate the possibility of AIHA/IMHA.
Good luck to you and Juliet.
