Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Question for Amy about Precious

Amy,

Great news about Precious. Is she off meds completely? If so, how long did it take before she was back to normal and off meds? Did the vet determine why she got IMHA? What "cocktail" of meds worked for her? How old was she when she got the disease? Did she make it back to her "old self"? Sorry for all the questions, but it will help me know what we can strive for. I am glad to hear that there are success stories out there.

Deb,

Since Amy does not post on this board too much any more, I thought I would mention that Precious is the November 2004 Success Story at the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Web site. You can read Precious' story at this URL

Scroll down to November to read about Precious.

I had an email from Amy recently and she will be sending me an update I can add to Precious' Success Story in the near future.

Deb:
I hope you concentrate on the success stories. They are becoming more common than when I first came to this forum 5 years ago. Precious is doing very well. She was on the cocktail of drugs for one year. She was at her peak in content at about 7 months and was weaned off over the next four months. She was 3 when diagnosed with AIHA and no specific cause was attributed. Because of the heavy steriods we had to give her then, we watch her weight now as she is a bundle of muscle. She stays at about 21 lbs. and is fast as lightning. We still give her all required vaccinations. We had a very dedicated and experienced vet and we owe her life to his care.

I cannot explain it but after fighting with her for that year, she became an even more loving and better behaved dog (if that was possible!) Definitely her old self and more. We don't consider her cured though. Relapses happen and while we pray that doesn't happen, we check her tongue and ear color, urine color and energy level every day.

I wish you the very best.
