Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Query -Osteosupport and AIHA

Hi
Ive just been to the vet with Bertie. More for a checkup for the year. While I was there, I mentioned to the vet that Bertie sometimes seems to struggle with walking for long perios(15 mins).. He sits down or jumps up for me to carry him. The vet mentioned he has bad knees in particular is left knee and that he also appears to have arthritis in his back(near his legs). He has given me some tablets(assured me they were ok but this was not the usual vet I see so of couse Im checkign!). It is joint care powder with the active ingredient being Green lipped muscle powder(Perna canaliculus). Is this ok to give him? Has anyone heard of this product?

Im still in shock as he is not even 4 years old. Im wondering if Im going to be carrying him soon...Im a little worried. My flatmate does play a little rough with him from time to time and Ive now given him orders to stop being so rough to see if this makes a difference.

Any advice? Thanks

Lisa,
This is a natural ingredient sometimes put in joint supplement products. Here is the first thing I could find on the net:
http://naturalmedicine.suite101.com/article.cfm/greenlipped_mussel_extract

I was giving Chance a product at one point made by Country Life with this in it.

Now for joints I am using plain old glucosamine, chondroiton and msm. You will probably see at least one of these on the label.

Lisa:

I recently contacted Dr. Dodds about supplements to help our GSD/Cocker Spaniel mix who has arthritis and is now (almost) in remission. She is currently taking Dasuquin with MSM but it hasn't made much of a difference as far as we can tell so we were looking for something else to try. These are two of the products Dr. Dodds recommended:

For chronic bone and muscle pain, DLPA [D, L phenylalanine] , the essential amino acid and endorphin stimulant. For her weight, a 500 mg capsule daily should work well (Sheba is approx. 55 lbs.) -- it takes about a week to kick in. We use the Solgar Vegetarian brand. I've taken it for 20 years for fibromyalgia.

The other possibility is to use DGP [Dog Gone Pain], the Australian herbal mixture that's readily available, but I don't know if it could be a problem for her - don't think so, but don't know for sure.

You might look into these. Good luck!

Great thanks for the replies. I will look into the above.
