My cocker spaniel is having a variety of issues growing in his ears. He has been given Primor, which after researching is a sulfadimethoxine/ormetoprim (sulfa)drug. One of the side effects is IMHA. I have already had one cocker spaniel die of this disease, not sure I am ready for another. Have other owners given sulfa drugs without complication? Thanks. Ann Marie

I don't have a clue if this is relevant - but Matilda had a severe - I mean SEVERE - reaction to a sulfa drug about 2 years before she was diagnosed with IMHA - within 30 minutes of giving her the pill (she had an infection in the pad of her foot) she looked like a cross between a sharpei and a crocodile (she is a 12 lb miniatue dachshund). I rushed her to the ER - and they rushed her back as soon as they saw me walk in the door with her. The vet on call said he had never seen such a sever reaction. So she was never given sulfa drugs again, so who knows if it was related to the IMHA - or just a symptom of her messed up immune system.

Ann Marie I have emailed you some information regarding sulfa drugs that Dr. Dodds was kind enough to send me. I was concerned about using TMZ-SMP prescribed by my Vet for one of my non AIHA dogs. I am glad I said No. Penny
