Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Presa Canario Chronic Lymphacytic Leukemia

Sooooo....
Magnus was just diagnosed with CLL today at Auburn University Vet School of Medicine (after 3 previous vet opinions).

Does anyone have good information on immune building diets for larger dogs? Dori (from Tick-L archives) emailed me about improving his diet and adding supplements to improve his immune system. When I asked the Oncologist about it today, she said that his diet of hard dog food would prove better...? (vet prescribed Purina ER for digestive disorders) Normally, our dogs eat holistic hard dog food without any fillers.

I am aware of the "Cats Claw" supplement, but before I dig my nose into the internet, I was hoping to find a shortcut here!

Thanks for any help!

Shannon,
I am so sorry to hear about Magnus. I had hoped this wouldn't be the case. Chronic Lymphacytic Leukemia can be treated with chemotherapy, as you have been probably told by now.

Here is a link to a webpage that contains a wealth of information about diet and treatments for all types of canine cancer. Mary Strauss, Dogaware and Whole Dog Journal, is well known in the canine world for her profound knowledge of canine nutrition and disease. You could probably spend a week reading all the links and information on this page.

Here is an excellent website that discusses this particular condition.

Please keep us up to date about Magnus' treatment.

Shannnon, I am so sorry to hear about Magnus, I think diet will play an extremely important role in Magnus treatment therapy.

I love B-naturals newsletters and my dog eats the liver diet they recommend, here is their cancer diet

http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/cancer-diet/

I just looked in my book Speaking for Spot, being your dogs advocate and there is a section on cancer and diet.

It says cancer is more likey to thrive on carbs a diet high in fats, low in carbs is good to fuel the patient rather then the cancer. And fish oil is extremly important as it has been shown to inhibit cancer.

Make sure any change in diet you do slowly

Sorry to hear about Magnus' diagnosis Shannon. I'll pray for a successfull treatment for him with the Chemo. Do your homework and hopefully Magnus will get over this cancer and live a long happy life. Be there for him and show him all the love he can handle.

Thanks for your responses everyone. Magnus received his second dose of chemo last night and hasn't shown any signs of upset tummy, lethargy, or appetite suppression. He is still full of energy and ready to eat!

I am currently feeding him WELLNESS CORE with cooked organic chicken breast until I find adequate information of supplemental doses. I found a holistic vet in California that can build a diet with supplements specifically for your pet with their blood panel. They said all patients are different so you don't want to feed a high protein diet if their liver or kidney (I can't remember which organ they listed) are being compromised by the disease. I am still doing my research.

I have a friend at work that is cancer free (for over a year now). He was diagnosed with Lymphoma. He took chemo treatments along with a completely new healthy diet and supplements. He raves about cat's claw. Anyone familiar with this supplement?

Thanks~
Shannon

Shannon, that is good news that Magnus is taking the chemo. If you look at the B-naturals cancer diet, it has supplment dosage per 50 # dog weight.

I remember seeing something about cats claw, do a search on cats claw side effects too.

Good luck

Mag is not having any problems with his chemo yet...This morning as I was massaging him I noticed a lot of hair coming off. Is it normal for hair loss this soon?

Shannon, again this is from my book speaking for Spot,

A paragraph states "And what about hair loss? Over time, some dogs experience hair coat changes but signigicant hair loss is exceedingly rare.

So I would ask your Vet about hair loss.
