Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Prend and what it does?

I know we all seem to be giving our doggies Prend, but can someone explain to me what it actually does, besides all the side effects?

Using Prednisone to treat AIHA/IMHA suppresses the immune system in order to stop the destruction of the red blood cells.
