Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Prednisone

It hasn't occurred to me that many dog owners have don't understand what prednisone does and what is meant by side effects. I found this very helpful webpage written by a vet that does a good job of describing this in detail.

Hi Patrice,

Can you forward a good hematology reference? I have an urge to read more, a bit like you I suppose. I could not help, but order Dr. Dodds' book on canine hypothyroidism, as I already know and support many other things she has supported publicly in her seminars and online. I read it cover to cover the day I got it, while watching over Dylan.

Although I have a background in physiology and pharmacology, it has been awhile and I am not one to like being inaccurate. So giving any advice here on this list, although it may appear that it is not difficult for me, it is difficult due to the fact that my background is not good enough. I certainly read all your posts closely and hope you don't mind me sharing what I learn from them. I certainly try to give you credit for much of what I know about the broader cases of AIHA.

I do know I am not a vet and try to be careful with my advice. And I always appreciate the expertise from multiple people working together, all providing different levels of expertise in different areas. Although my expertise is currently in canine and human behavior, I have been working on a broader knowledge of canine health, specializing mostly in cognitive health, but with an understanding that overall physical health is required.

This has been delayed by Dylan's condition and altered for the time being to wanting a more specific knowledge of canine health. Oxygen in the blood is critical to health, obviously, as is the immune system. This is also why I read the hypothyroid book. I do see behavioral problems as a result of misdiagnosed hypothyroidism, on a regular basis.

Although I have generally taught Dog Agility (was working on moving beyond dog agility prior to Dylan being diagnosed), I am most often asked to solve behavioral problems related to performance, in private sessions. Many times these are related to the dogs underlying physical health too. I get asked to help because I offer lots of advice on training the mind for performance and people know I have a M.Sc. in Psychology, unlike any of the other agility trainers.

Anyways, sorry I am sure you are busy and I appreciate anything you have to offer,

Oh, and I have spent plenty of time in medical school libraries and can likely find anything there, but I am sure there is a sea of choices too.

Thanks again,

Book:
Schalm's Veterinary Hematology. This can be read at google books. Some pages will be blocked the more you use this. I have my own copy. Or do an intralibrary loan from your local library. You may have to pay $5 or more for this service. See worldcat for a library search engine.
