Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Prayer Request / NBC investigation into pet produc

obviously let's keep all the prayers lifted up for all of our dogs who are battling this disease, and other diseases...and the healthy ones too, for continued health.
and prayers for the owners, who do a wonderful job of trying to provide the best scenarios for improvement for there animals.
but 1 special request, everyone throw in a specific prayer for patrice..
i know she is going thru a rough time right now and chance is having some difficulties on top of that, so keep her in your thoughts..
she has been amazing to me and sway and provided this board with an amazing and compassionate pile of knowledge...
thank you!

also, something completely unrelated-
i just saw a commercial a few minutes ago about channel 4 (nbc) out here in california running a special investigation on tuesday at 11pm about over the counter pet products that end up killing countless pets..
i believe joel grover is doing it, and in the commercial they aren't specific with the product names but its obvious that this should/will be on flea/heartworm products...
anyone that can check it out should try to see it-

I want to thank everyone for their warm wishes for Chance and update you on what has been happening this week.

Chance has been having some trouble just the last couple of weeks with decreasing energy levels, irregular heartbeats and some fluid accumulation in the lungs. When he lost his appetite a few days ago I knew that he was not feeling very well.

I was very suspicious that he had developed DCM, dilated cardiomyopathy. A visit to my vet earlier this week showed fluid accumulation around the heart on an x-ray, but a special test is needed to determine exactly what the real problem is.

Yesterday I drove to Buffalo so that our internal med specialist could do an echocardiogram of Chance's heart. They also did an ekg. (Of course they allowed me to be part of all the testing, this facility is extraordinary)

Dr. B did some calculations and determined that Chance does not have DCM, which is an enormous relief! His mitral valve insufficiency is a little bit more significant than was measured last July. In addition, his minor arrhythmia has become a little more troublesome. Last July, he was discharged without meds and with no restrictions because these were so insignificant.

So we now have him on some heart meds, which he responded to immediately. His case is very mild and once the arrhythmia is under control, he will be back to a nearly unrestricted activity level. This morning he actually came upstairs and slept with me on the bed! He took a slowish but long walk this morning and he did just fine.

Large breeds commonly have these heart problems and it was made worse by the drugs we used to treat him for his anemia. This treatment he is on now will not cure him, but he can live a very full life for at least several more years if we modify his activities somewhat. He is a very old dog as Giants go and each day after we successfully treated him for IMHA is a bonus.
Thank you for all your good thoughts for Chance!

Patrice,

Thanks for the update on Chance. I am glad to hear that he has responded so quickly to the heart meds and that once the arrhythmia is under control, he can go back to a nearly unrestricted activity level.

It's really great to hear that it was not the dilated cardiomyopathy. You really know your stuff so I think that Chance is in the best hands possible. He's really a lucky dog to have you. Keep up the good work and give him hugs from Tessy and I. Everybodies prayers must be working!
