Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Popeye lost his fight

Hello everyone. I havn't posted in awhile. We have been through various ups and downs lately. Had some technical problems posting, been busy, etc. Anyway, I just want to thank everyone for their prompt and intelligent support during this short, intense battle of just over two months. My Popeye lost his fight today. After not being able to get up from a resting position, we made the decision to have him put down. I will continue to monitor this site and offer my heartfelt support to those diagnosed and those yet to be diagnosed with this horrible (and often unknowingly, at the time / vaccine induced - as in this case) condition.
Thank you all again.
Allison TX

Dear Allison -- I was saddened to read that your dear Popeye lost his fight against IMHA. This is such a horrible disease, and you and Popeye put up a good fight. As someone who also lost her beloved dog to this disease, I know how you feel right now. And my husband and I, like you, had to make the decision to let her go. It was the hardest decision we have ever had to make.

Please know that you did the best you could, with the information and resources you had available, to help Popeye fight IMHA. And I hope you take comfort knowing that you gave Popeye a wonderful life and you now have many memories to sustain you. Your grief will be hard -- this disease is such a shock because most of us have never heard of it and it strikes so quickly -- but your memories will be a real comfort.

I hope you do stay with us on the forum, because it does help so much to "be" with people who know what you have gone through. The people here have been so helpful to me since we lost our beagle, Wiley, to IMHA in May 2005. Unfortunately, I didn't find this site until after she was gone.

I am so sorry for your loss. Words cannot suffice at a time like this. I too know the pain as I lost Stormie to AIHA within 48 hours of dx.
You are not alone...take care of yourself.

Allison,
I am so saddened to read your news of your loss of Popeye. It is never easy to say goodbye and I know how hard it is to lose a dog to this awful disease. I hope in the coming days you can remember the good times with Popeye and be able to smile again. You were a good doggy Mom and I know Popeye is at the bridge playing with a lot of our dogs until you meet again.
Sharing in your sorrow.

Hi Allison. I am so sorry to read your news. I have lost dogs in the past (not to AIHA) and I know that no words can ease the sadness at the time of loss. I'm sure Popeye knew he was loved and I believe that, at the end of the day, that's what matters the most - that you loved Popeye and he loved you.

Please take care of yourself now. Big hugs to you and your family.

Allison and Family
Please accept our deepest condolences in the loss of your beloved Popeye. I am sure Popeye will meet many new friends that have also died of this terrible disease when he crosses over the rainbow bridge and he will be greeted with the wagging tails of dogs who are no longer suffering.
Take care and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Allison. Like everyone on this site, I was deeply saddened to hear of Popeye's passing. He was a much loved dog and put up a strong fight against this dreadful disease. He is at peace now, in a healthy body that's free of pain. Please take comfort in knowing that you did everything possible for Popeye. He's watching over you now, sending you the love he shared with you for the too short time he was on this earth.

Allison,

I lit a "virtual" candle for Popeye on the gratefulness.org website that I posted in another thread. Many on the golden retriever forum have found comfort doing this...... it's a very easy, private way to honor or memorialize a loved one. I started an AIHA group after hearing your sad news. They stay lit for 48 hours, so I'll continue to pray for Pop and light candles to light his way to the bridge.

We just got through burying him in our backyard. My kids each drew a picture for him and wanted a photo of each of them included with it. (in the grave) It is a cold night and the first time in 24 hours that any of this has felt like it was "real". Reading everyone's posts, helps me not feel so lost and alone in all of this. Thank you again!
