Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Phoebe's Home!!!!

Hi everyone

As you can see from my thread title my little girl is back home. After nearly two weeks apart I can't quite believe she is sitting next to me on the sofa whilst I am typing this update.

We had a huge panic last wednesday when she developed a big lump on her tummy - turned out to be a large abscess which Royal Dick drained and sent to lab (still awaiting results) but in the meantime she has been put on Synulox antibiotic. Then came the great news that we could collect her on saturday (hubby set off very early morning and she was back home by 2.00 p.m.). She had lost a little weight, was quite quiet and a bit overwhelmed I think, to be back home. One thing we did notice that when the phone rang she jumped up and barked (like a hearing dog for the blind!!) I guess there must have been a phone in the ward next to her and she associated the phone with someone coming to see her!! who says you can't teach an old dog (sorry phoebe) new tricks.

Anyway, day three and she is sitting next to me, her PCV when she was sent home was 37 and she is eating like a horse. Her prednisolone has been reduced but her atopica increased!! She is also taking an aspirin in the morning as the reason for being admitted to Royal Dick was for a blood clot in her lungs. Whilst we are giving good news, we also received a letter to say that the Insurance will (after a long and hard battle) be paying towards her vet costs - (I had to threaten them with the Financial Insurance Ombudsman, but it seemed to work).

I have just been catching up with posts and noticed that Kathleen, Nollaig isn't doing too good - please Kathleen hand in there - I really didn't think there was much hope for Phoebe but it's like everyone keeps saying this awful disease seems to respond to time - I am keeping you and Nollaig in my prayers and thoughts and if you need to, please email me direct, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the vets at Royal Dick are - I really didn't think we would get Phoebe back home, but here she is better than when she left so please, please, please do not give up hope.

Everyone else, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the words of encouragement and help when my baby was away from home - I just hope that some of my replies can help others in their struggle - their everyday struggle, even when they are improving we all still worry!!

Thanks again everyone

Gill & Phoebe xx

Well done Phoebe, hope you continue to fight and improve and put this awful disease behind you once and for all. So pleased for you Gill and thanks for your kind wishes and prayers for Nollaig, keep them coming, she needs them at the moment.Nollaig's vet at Glasgow has been excellent and he's done all the things/trying all the drugs that I've asked him to.Unfortunately some dogs with prca just have a much harder time and a tougher journey than others and the vets don't know why some respond to drugs and others don't.

We start her on nandrolone injections tomorrow and I just hope and pray that either this or just her own bodies natural healing with God's help turns this around very soon.

Best Wishes
Kathleen and Nollaig

thank you each and everyone for your kind words - still keep pinching myself that my little girl is sitting next to me (snoring her head off!!). She continues to eat like a horse and has again been playing with her squeaky toys this morning. I am trying to stay in the moment and enjoy these days of pure bliss as I know with this disease tomorrow is another day and another possible episode - so for the moment I am being positive, happy (which I have not felt in a long long time) and smiling every time I look down at my beautiful black and white princess!!

Whilst I am celebrating Phoebe's current good health, I am also praying and wishing that all the fantastic Mums and Dads find the strength to do battle with this awful illness, that they find help and comfort amongst each other within the AIHA community, even though things are going well at present for us, I can never forget that somewhere, someone is suffering!!

My thoughts and prayers are with you all

Kind Regards

This is brilliant news and you must feel ecstatic. I can remember how it felt driving to royal dick to collect Shaunna - it was one of the longest journey's of my life and even though her future is still uncertain, it's just wondrous to have her home.

Pheobe has been through so much and her progress is testimony that dogs can and do beat prca.

Best wishes,
Claire

Gill,

That is great news to hear. It is so good to come on here and be able to share the highs and give hope to those that are feeling the lows. So pleased for Phoebe. I hope this is last she sees of this dreadful illness.

Gill, how is Phoebe girl doing? Are you getting some rest/sleep now that your baby is home? I hope so. When time allows, let us know how your girl is doing. Take care.

Hi Mardi

Phoebe is lying next to me - everyone who has come to visit says how good she is looking at present, she's even began barking at the post man again!!!

Although I am happy to have her home, I cannot get off 'Red Alert' as the last time she was poorly we went to bed and she was fine, at 3.00 a.m. she was gasping for breath - so I don't think any mums or dads truly switch off, even when all seems relatively well!!

But one thing is for sure, that when things are going well for one furbaby there are lots who are having such a hard time, these are never far from my thoughts and prayers and I just wish I had a magic wand to make all the suffering stop for all of them and their carers!!!

Best wishes to all

thank you so much for enquiring about Phoebe - she's my world!!

Kind regards

Wonderfull to hear Phoebe is home with you. Try not to let the RED ALERT mode get to you....I'm still on alert daily and probably always will be with Tessy. Barking at the postman.....how cute! She likes to snore also? I remember when Tessy had her snoring and breathing spell...lasted almost a month. She'ld snore so loud I barely got any sleep at night.

Hugs and high paws from Tessy.
