After losing a battle against AIHA with my dog Allie and of course wondering if anything could have been different, I am sure I did every test and thing possible for her. But I am curious for future reference, does anyone have pet insurance and is it covering AIHA, and how much? I know many policies are different, but I was hoping to hear anyone experience. I think I am ready to add a new member to my family and am a little parinoid about dealing with something like this again, emotionally and finacially. Kat

Kate; First let me say how sorry I am for your loss. What a horrid disease this is. My dog is Sam. He has had AIHA since this past summer. I have VPI insurance. It has refused to cover any of the treatments, except for the prednisone basically. The reason stated is that there is too little known about the disease, and it can be from too many sources. So there you go. The sad answer is no, they don't cover very much of the costs, and we who love our animals will pay anything to save them. Most of us on this site have paid thousands of dollars in treatment costs. I would have another "kid" in an instant! The joy they bring into our lives is worth it. Just do things differently and keep your fingers and toes crossed. I have had so many different dogs in my life, and Sam is the first one to have AIHA, so the odds are in our favor of this being a "freak" incident. Good luck, hang in there, and my suggestion is get a "MUT". Becky and Sam (I am)

I have pet insurance for Trixie, never had to use it before, the vets are claiming direct from the company, just as well because at the beginning I paid out quite a lot for blood tests and medication. I was able to claim that back though. I pay around £9.00 per month for insurance, the excess is £70. I have never had to make a claim before, so I am hoping that Trixie will continue to be covered, if not i don't know what I'll do Tricia

I had Tess insured with Petcare from when she was a puppy. We had her on the Mastercare plan and when she was diagnosed with IMHA/ITP they accepted the claims and we were able to recover $5000 of the vet bills. She at that point reached the maximum payable under that illness category based on our plan. She is no longer covered but the initial payment went a long way. Claudine

out of about $10,000 in AIHA vet bills this year for Sway, VPI has covered about $3,500.

Slinky is covered under VPI as well, and they have covered her IMHA. I haven't kept the best track, but I think she did max out their coverage. I think they paid out about $1000 for tests and treatment. Her policy renewed in Oct. shortly after she maxed, so we're in pretty good shape. Her total bills haven't been as bad as some since she avoided hospitalization or transfusion.
