This is just a general question. Have any of you had any experience with purchasing pet insurance? and more specifically, has anyone on this forum had the insurance when their dog came down with AIHA? If so, was it covered and what was your experience? I don't have a dog at the moment as we are still grieving, but when I decide to get another I think I am going to get insurance. My daughter has it for her lab, and has used it several times for surgery to remove various things the dog has swallowed. She has had no problems and several years ago tried to convince me I should get it. Now after having spent nearly $14,000.00 on my dog I feeling a little stupid. My Internal medicine vet thought that "Best Pets" was the one that covered the most with out alot of exclusions. I know some diseases are excluded from coverage for various breeds if they are predisposed to have serious problems. I was wondering, say, if Cocker Spaniels might be excluded for coverage treating AIHA if they are more prone to this disease. I don't think this will do any of us with sick dogs any good, but it may be helpful for all of us in the future...Ron

Ron, I have looked into this a number of times but ended up backing away because the bulk of the insurance is paid out to things like routine vaccinations. I no longer do routine vaccinations, but titer, so this would be of little value to us. I have talked with someone who actually worked at a pet insurance company and they confided that the exclusions etc are carefully tailored to make sure the company makes money. I wouldn't base my opinions on one disgruntled employee. But I have to admit that any insurance company's goal is to make money! So reading the fine print and asking a lot of questions is probably prudent. I think some of the exclusions are breed and size related as well. Puts me at a disadvantage also. Patrice

I have pet insurance on both of my dogs, and had it at the time that Slinky was diagnosed-thankfully I started it up on her the month we got her. I use VPI and have been satisfied with it. They have covered some of Slinky's AIHA costs. The maximums work out to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 900-100$ per year, so we maxed out fairly early in the process, but that's still several hundred I got back. I could look up some specifics on charges and reimbursement, but pretty much everything was covered at some level, including the PCV's and CBC's as we went through treatment. Slinky was diagnosed in June and her policy was renewed with no problems in October, re-setting the maximums for the next year. I've been lazy about filing charges now that we're only checking PCVs every month and my vet only charges $30 for those-blood collection is 15 and the test is 15. They do cover annual visits, which being in Chicago, run us a bit, even without vaccines.

Ron, I haven't posted to this forum in quite some time. I did have insurance for Tess prior to her diagnosis in 2004, through Petcare. We had chosen the Mastercare POlicy which has a maximum payout per disease/incident of $5000. (they do hive higher payout amounts/plans. They did indeed pay out without question the $5000 for Tess's treatment. They then amended her policy to indicate that we had reached the maximum payout for any blood-born illnesses (per the policy)- they also increased out premiums by double! Claudine
