OK did I mess up or is it not too big of a mistake? I forgot to give Lincoln his pepcid 20 min before dinner. He was so excited to eat I just feed him and didn't realize until I was getting his med together. I gave him everything else and waited about 30 min and then gave him the pepcid. Is that OK? I know it is better to give it first but is it ok to give after?

Dear Trish, It would be much worse if you forgot to dose the Prednisone or Azathioprine! The pepcid is the stomach protectant, so not as critical if you miss a dose. I used to dose Millie with Carafate (I think known as sulcrafate in the US), one hour before meds, as this medication CAN interfere with absorption of the other meds. I would dose Millie with a drug called Losec, (which I believe is the same as Pepcid, just sold under a different name in Australia), and I'd do this at the same time I gave her the Azathioprine and Prednisone. I understand this is a stomach acid controller, which aids in the prevention of ulcers. So, I don't think you dosing 30 minutes after other meds is going to cause Lincoln any problems at all! I hope he is going well. Hugs, Sam & Millie.

Hello Trish, I know the feeling of shock when you realize you forgot something. Like Samantha said, forgetting the pepcid is not that critical. but you want to keep track of all the drugs. In one of the first days I rushed to the vet one time thinking I killed my dog with giving him too much medication! Turned out I did not..... I looked pretty stupid and did not want that to happen again. The vet gave me a daily calendar and I thought, do they think I am stupid? But after all the sleepless nights and the worry, my brain went to mush:) So I did the following: every night I got all the drugs ready in a weekly pill container that I labeled with the times. Daily containers do not have enough compartments! Then when I gave the drug I marked it on the calendar. This way when I forgot I knew right away before giving an other drug. It was quite a production, but once I got the hang of it it became second nature and I never forgot or mixed up any medication again. I think Lincoln should be on a stronger stomach protectant than pepcid. He might develop ulcers from the harsh drugs he has to deal with. Run it by your vet rather sooner than later. He is on large doses and might be for a while. Best wishes, Brigitte & the poodle boys

Great tip on the pill box,I'm doing that tomorrow! BTW, what other kind of stomach protectant would you use?

Hi Jacki, I would use Carafate / Sulcralfate. This drug lines the stomach to protect it. It is important to give this at least one hour before the other drugs, as it does interfere with the absorption of the other meds. Highly recommend this along with Pepcid. Sam and Millie.

Jacki, I kept a calendar on the fridge door where I wrote the meds/dosage and time as I gave them. It helps so much to be able to keep track when your mind is on so many other things.

Good Evening. We have a 3 year old Yellow Lab Maggie that developed AIHA in June 2010. We had a rough go off it during the summer but she survived with the help of our great Vet and many sleepless nights. She was on a combination of Prednisone, Imuran, Losec, & Sulcrate. We finally weened her off her Prednisone & Imuran in December. Her hematocrit went from a low of 15 back up to 48. Now we have had a major setback. 5 days ago she seemed a little lethargic and we discovered her hematocrit had dropped to 27 and by two days ago 19 despite the introduction of Prednisone & Imuran. She weighs 36 kg and is on Prednisone 75mg twice per day and Imuran 75mg per day. We are also giving her Sulcrate 1g twice per day and Losec 20mg per day. She has marked diarrhea with flecks of blood. I have a couple of questions; does anyone have experience with Losec 20mg twice per day, or the introduction of cyclosporine? We are keeping our fingers crossed that she will survive this relapse. We are off to the Vet again in the morning. Any comments appreciated.
