Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Penny update, 10/26

This thing is such a roller-coaster! Today is day 7, and things are finally starting to turn around. We visited Penny at the vet hospital last night and she is up and eating. Such a change in 24 hours! Apparently the blood transfusion is working, her PCV is now 26. It had been 8 before they gave the blood. I know that the improvement is just from the transfusion, but the bone marrow biopsy shows that the marrow IS regenerative, and there was no agglutination with the donor blood, so we have hope again. We may get to bring Penny home this evening.

Thanks for your support -- I'm so sorry to find so many people who understand what is going on, because I wouldn't wish this on anyone else. That said, I am so grateful for your words of encouragement!

that is great news...
proof of regeneration is an excellent development.
its been 5 months for me and sway and she is still showing no regeneration...she is holding steady though at 20-25

Christine, great news that Penny's bone marrow is regenerative. I remember feeling such relief when we got the same news about Duck's bone marrow. Duck had been at 11 and post transfusion went up to 25. He dipped to 19 and then just started steadily climbing. I think the medication had had a chance to kick in and also his marrow was producing new red cells. So if Penny's PCV drops a bit at the next check, try not to worry too much (yeah right!!!) because it is to be expected.

Good luck to you and please keep us posted.

Christine,
Very good news! Blood transfusions are so helpful in the early days and it's a real plus that it was compatible!

In the worse days we weren't sure if Chance would have to be put down, my vet told me that if this were a human, there would be no question about supporting with transfusions.
I hope Penny is home by the time you read this.
