| Our county has seen a VERY high increase in a different strain of parvo. Humane Society closed down as 3 dogs passed from it. Now some vets are saying they may have to vaccinate MORE OFTEN! That even vaccinated dogs can be at risk. They are scaring the liver out of us here in Michigan! Thanks for listening. Here is a link if you would like to read about it...I fought having Tillie vaccinated for several years and finally gave in last year to a 3 year parvo/distemper etc. Link: http://www.woodtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8886937 |

| It's my understanding that this is a different strain of Parvo and current vax does not cover this strain, so vaxing more often with the current vax will not (imo) do any good. Although the AVMA does cover it's bases by stating it's a different strain, the current vax "may not" be as effective, but vax your dog anyways. I've heard that the main concern with this strain is that it has been seen and been fatal in some adult dogs. If you dog has previous been vax according to guidelines, basic immunology tells me that revax will not improve your odds against this strain. A caveat to this would be if you dog has very low titers to the existing vax strains of parvo. Revaxing when adequate antibodies already exist does not improve your dogs immune response long term. This is older data (2003), but Schultz says that core vaccines ... are essential for all dogs, yet he does not recommend dogs receive these shots yearly. "With the exception of rabies, the vaccines for CDV, CPV-2 and CAV trigger an immunological memory of at least seven years," he explains. Here is a recent discussion with Dr. Dodds on the radio regarding duration of immunity and the rabies challenge fund. Even though the focus is on the rabies challenge fund, it's worth a little listen if you have time ... (it can even run in the background if you're working on other stuff on your computer), http://www.blogtalkradio.com/animaltalknaturally/2008/07/30/Duration-of-Immunity-The-Rabies-Vaccine-Challenge-Show-186 AVMA: http://www.avma.org/animal_health/canine_parvovirus_faq.asp |
