Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Panzers Ordeal

Our little Panzer is a fighter. She is a 13yr old Mini Schnauzer who was diagnosed in August of 2007. We have been in a battle for her health ever since. She was in remission in December and is now in a relapse. She started back on the Prednisone, but it isn't working, so she is going to start on Imuran Monday. Her numbers are down to 19, lower than her first diagnoses. Between remission and relapse, we were dealing with kidney disease from the high doses of Pred. We are praying just to get her to Monday. She has to have the meds compounded, and the pharmacy is open on Monday. When she survived her first episode, the DR's, staff, and my husband and I were amazed she survived. She was so very sick. We did not do any transfusions or hospital stays because of her age. The Pred worked well, but we had to wait for it to kick in. They say she is a miracle. When I used the word battle I meant it. She has done her part, but I am physically and emotionally exhausted. Mentally from the good days and bad days, physically, from getting up two to three times a night for bathroom breaks and meds. I would keep doing all this for the great companion she has been, and will be, but it is a trial. My personal thoughts on what brought it on was a dose of Intraceptor, she had a bad reaction one month, hiding and shivering, then when I gave it to her the next month, she came down with the AIHA within two days. But, I don't really know. Thank you for listening....Apes and Panzer

April,
I am so sorry Panzer has had a relapse. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself too.

So sorry to hear of Panzer's relapse. Hang in there. It is a tough road. We can relate to the lack of sleep and the stress and worry. The best we can do is to take it a day at a time and hope for the best.

Thank you for your kind words. We are starting the Imuran today. For her PCV's being @ 19 on Saturday and having to go all Sat night, Sunday and Monday, she holding up okay. Really and truly you need a support group, like this board, as it is so unreal the havoc this disease can wreak. No one could understand unless they have been through the same things. It is totally unexplainable. When she was first diagnosed eight months ago, I read somewhere about the commitment it was going to take. Well, Panzer and myself had no idea. Off I go to the compounding pharmacy. Thank you for listening....
