Our 9 yr old Maltese was diagnosed this week with Anemia. He became very lethargic on Sunday. A visit to vet with enema, blood work and fluids for dehydration came back with this. He is now on prednisone, anti-biotic and pepcid. As of today I don't see much improvement. He's still quite wobbly, stays laying down most of the time. We are quite concerned as he only has a bit of an appetite, drinking some and not defecating. What do you feed a dog diagnosed with this to help him regain the blood cells/energy? Defecate?

Hi Ed, I'm near you here in Cheektowaga, NY. I have a 3yr survivor of AIHA. He's a Springer, named Spencer. Regarding food, boiled chicken and rice may spark an interest. You may want to consider taking your dog to see an internal medicine specialist. Having a vet familiar with the disease is very helpful. PCV counts are monitored frequently in the beginning as more medication may need to be added. Your dog will have limited energy until his PCV counts go up. The dog should start drinking more because of the prednisone. Hope your dog improves. Kim and Spencer

Ed, Patrice here near Rochester. If you have not, please make an appointment with Dr. David Brummer at Orchard Park Animal Hospital. He is an excellent internist. You are not very far away where you are. Appointments are in the mornings and procedures are done in the afternoon. My best, Patrice

Ed, I am so very sorry to hear your dear Maltese, Squirt has recently been diganosed with AIHA. If you have not read my Web site on AIHA/IMHA as yet http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/ you might want to do so when you can. Be sure to follow the links on the first page to many other sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the SUCCESS STORIES pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in terms of treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE. I truly do know how hard this is so be assured that you and Squirt are in my thoughts and prayers during these very difficult days.

Hi Ed, I second Patrice's recommendation about Dr. Brummer in Orchard Park. Spencer saw him too. He is very knowledgable. Kim

Thank you all for your response and kind words! We are looking into this internist so highly recommended and hope for the best. His female companion Precious of 8 yrs. (they've had 3 pups) is beginning to show signs of worry for her mate. It's so sad to see him like this, we are devastated.
