Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - our bearded collie Daisy

Daisy was rushed to the emergency room Monday because her rbc was at 12%. She has since had a transfusion and her count went up to 20%. Today, Thursday we found out that her count went down a few points and the vet is performing a bone marrow aspiration to see if the problem is there. If so, she will treat with another type of medication. Her appetite is fine, her bowels and urine are fine. We are just hoping that this can be controlled and we can get her home a.s.a.p.

Melissa,

I am so very sorry to hear that your dear Daisy is ill. Has she officially been diagnosed with AIHA/IMHA?

It is very common for the PCV to drop in the first few days after diagnosis of AIHA/IMHA since it takes some time for the medications to start to work. It can take 5-7 days for prednsione to start to work and even longer for some of the other drugs used to treat AIHA/IMHA to "kick in". In the meantime, blood transfusions are helpful in that they buy time until the meds do start to work.

If you have not read my Web site on AIHA/IMHA as yet,

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

you might want to do so when you can. Be sure to follow the links on the first page to many other sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the SUCCESS STORIES pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in terms of treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE.

Be assured that you and Daisy are in my thoughts and prayers during these most difficult days.

We are so happy to hear that Daisy will be home for the weekend...we wish her well...beardies Chip and Denny will get some extra attention with thoughts of Daisy (like they could get any more attention!). Have a great weekend together, keep us posted...

Hi Melissa,
I also have a Daisy but she is a Maltese. She was diagnosed with IMHA on 1/24 with a pcv of 10. She received a transfusion, ultrasound, x-ray, bone marrow and lymph node aspirations. My Daisy has non-regenerative IMHA. Her pcv counts go up and down. But I am happy to say that after my vet conferred with Dr. Dodds and her meds were increased (not to mention she received her third transfusion on 2/24 a day after the increased meds) her count went up to 26 then dropped a week later to 22 and is holding as of last night. I was told that her counts will go up and down until she is stablized. Any questions you have this is the site to ask them on. Good luck.

ps What part of NJ are you from?
