Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Onset of this disease...

Jack was first diagnosed with aiha on may 29th. I read alot of dogs get aiha in spring. is this true. Could jack have gotten it from something in the environment

Dear Robin,

There are many potential causes / triggers of IMHA.

We are almost 100% sure that we can put our little Millie's IMHA down to her vaccination, which of course is not driven by the season.

She was also clipped for the first time since we adopted her (also around the time of her vaccination), so the stress of this might have also been the trigger.

But then she was also put under anaesthetic to have her teeth cleaned the week after her vaccination, so could this be the cause?

About 3 weeks later, she was diagnosed with IMHA.

We'll never pin down the cause exactly as these three things occurred witin a week, but I don't take any risks with her anymore. I try to keep her life stress-free, healthy and natural as possible (apart from the bi-weekly vet visits which I know stress her out)!

I guess it is possible that some allergies bought on by the springtime could trigger this immune response, but in a lot of cases, you can only guess what the cause might be.

Can you think of anything within the month of Jack getting sick that could be the trigger?

Samantha & Millie.

Oliver had minor surgery to remove fatty tumors and, after biopsied, Squamous cell carcinoma in May 2009. According to biopsy it appeared all cancer cells were removed. Approximately 2 weeks after the surgery he had a bordatella (sp) vaccine as I was planning on boarding him in late June. July 3 is when I took him to the emergency vet and his PCV was 22. So, very well could have been vaccine induced and/or surgery. I will never know! Good luck and keep us posted.

My standard poodle had IMHA crisis in December. Possible front runner triggers (in my mind anyway) are tickborne disease, and/or Frontline application. Wish I knew for sure!

Ethel's IMHA occured in July, after an extended Malassezia (yeast) infection in her ears that made it to her skin, causing (we believe) a systemic reaction that got out of hand. No recent immunizations, and several weeks had passed since her last Frontline dose.

My standard poodle was diagnosed end of May 2008 (3 years old) and relapsed end of April 2009.

Ren was diagnosed in September of 2007, relapsed September 2008. We believe her AIHA was brought on by vaccination.
