Well the vet called today with good news. Olivers recent PCV was at 15, which might not sound good, but has apparently stabilized for the last two weeks. My vet indicated that an increase in PCV after this period of time is ideal, at least he has stabilized at this point instead of slowly dropping like he has for the last month. His red blood cells are still regenerating and at a good high amount and his white blood cells are awesome. She is leaving him at 50mg prednisone two times a day and has incresed the azathioprine 50mg to every day, instead of every other day. I am so glad I followed all of your advice to get a second opinion. Its been a long hard battle, but I am at least hopeful that he is on the upward swing. He goes back again next week for labs. I will keep you all posted. Thanks..

Mardi I think it's great that his pcv is holding, and as long as clinically he is ok, the vets would probably hold off on a transfusion for now, especially as he seems to be highly regenerative. They just want to give Oliver a chance for his pcv to increase itself. Just make sure they keep an eye on his white cells too on the azathioprine,Nollaig was fine on it for 6 weeks(although it didn't help her pcv) but then her white cells dropped to a dangerously low level where she could have caught a life threatening infection.Azathioprine was immediately stopped and her white cells returned to normal. This does not happen in all dogs however, in fact azathioprine is the drug that works for a lot of them but just thought I'd mention it although I'm sure you're vet is keeping an eye out for that anyway. Here's hoping his pcv rises next wee.let us know. Kathleen and Nollaig

Great to hear Olivers PCV is stabilizing Mardi. I can't help but wonder why they would switch the aza to every day instead of every other day since the original meds seemed to have been stabilizing him. Perhaps they are still seeing some destruction occuring? Do you get spherocyte numbers with each visit? Give Oliver hugs from Tessy and I. Hoping for the best for him. Johnny & Tessy

Thanks for the good thoughts everyone. I don't know abut the spherocyte numbers, I will have to ask. She indicated no transfusion at this point because, besides the low PCV, he is doing remarkably well. Eating, drinking, no lethargy, etc. Vet indicated she/I wanted to keep a close eye on Oliver because the higher dose could run risk of infection. So will find out next week. thanks for all your help. Its made a world of a difference. I will repost again next week to let everyone know where he is at and will ask about the spherocyte numbers. I sure hope his PCV increases soon. Take care.
