Olivers PVC was 33. The doctor said that he is getting better but wants us to continue the treatment as previously told. I dont know if this number is good or promising or what. We are hoping for the best. Mark

Mark: Great news about Oliver! 33 is both a good number and promising since if I'm not mistaken (and maybe Patrice can chime in here with the right answer) a PCV of 35-50 is considered normal in most dogs. So, whatever it is you're doing - keep it up. It sounds like Oliver is on his way! Rita, Mike and Sheba

Mark, Normal PCV in a dog is in a range from 37-55. A PCV of 33 so soon after diagnosis is GREAT. I agree with your vet to continue treatment. You might want to take a look at this page http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2144&aid=987 to learn more about various components of the blood. This page http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0&aid=989 also would be very helpful to you.

Mark, A PCV of 33% is *excellent* and can sustain Oliver quite nicely. The low end of the range is 37% and the high range is up around 55%. Chance has a normal PCV of 38%. He had his spleen removed a few months before his AIAH due to a large growth on it. So his PCV will always be on the low, but normal, side of the range. Some dogs can survive quite well, with some life-style alterations, at even lower PCV's. Since you are on the increase, I think you can expect that in the future Oliver's PCV will rise to a normal number. The importance of continuing the immunosuppressive treatment at this point on a steady, but slowly decreasing dosage, is very important. There should be no sudden decreases of any of the medications that are being given. If your vet seems unsure about where to go with these decreases, please ask here about what to do. Plenty of folks have been on slightly different decrease rates and have lots of good advice. my best patrice

This one does not work either, sorry so try clicking on the words "complete blood count" when viewing the second article. I can't figure out why this doesn't work when posting the URL. I have the same URL on the FAQ page on my Website http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/faq.htm and it works fine.
