I am starting a new thread for Barb's post so everyone can see it. Joanne Barb, NJ, rosgood504@comcast.net Our poodle Oliver was diagnosed on Saturday with red blood cell destruction, he's bleeding from his mouth occasionally. His platelet level was only 10,000. He was put on antibiotics and prednisone. It came on suddenly, within a few days. He has bruises all over his skin and is hardly eating and just lays on the sofa. He's only 7. I don't know if he's strong enough to fight until the steroids take effect. Has anyone's pet had this low of platelets and survived? Thanks.

Barb, I am so sorry to hear of your dear Oliver's illness. It sounds like he may have ITP (Immune mediated throbocytopenia) instead of AIHA/IMHA. I urge you to read the story of "Midnight the Miracle IPT Dog" who had ZERO platelets when she was diangnosed with ITP. Midnight's story is found at the following URL http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/midnight.htm At the end of Midnight's story is a couple of links to info on ITP that will be helpful to you. There is also a link on Midnight's page which will take you to the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Web site. Be assured both you and your dear Oliver are in my thoughts and prayers during these most difficult days.

Barb, Did your vet happen to give you a PCV count (Packed cell volume). Sometimes dogs have both low PCV's and platlets. Then they are suffering from a conditon known as Evan's Syndrome.

Hello Barb, Kent had this same thing last November. With our Vet we decided we needed to do a transfusion and he had one split in half - half in evening, half in morning. He did recover after this, and is in recovery. We are at the stage of trying to reduce the pred and imuran. If your Oliver has such a low count, i would urge you to discuss a transfusion with your vet. Though the transfusion doesnt 'replace' all the lost platelets it buys time for the other meds to work. This is what bought Kent time and we are glad he had a transfusion. Welcome to the list, please keep posting little Oliver's progress, Christine and Kent

Barb, My then 10 year old Golden Retriever was diagnosed with Evan's Syndrome in Nov 05...he will be 13 in a few weeks! Even though your dog acts weak it takes lots of time for the medications to work. Hang in there and be strong for your dog...I know it's hard. I am in NJ as well, what Animal Hospital are you using? Make sure you Vet is well versed in AIHA/ITP and please keep us all posted on how Oliver is doing! We are sending good thoughts your way! Jeanne in NJ Goldens, Angelo & Archie
