Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Non-Regentive Aneima/ IMHA

I need advice for my 8 year old Doxie Yaz..... I am not sure if anything else can be done..It doesn't look like a blood transfusion is an option for him.... His P.C.V is 7%..And he is still eating drinking walking..and Yes Talking..Being a German Dog..He still retains his Will!! But to be honest..Dr.'s are stumped. We are having a phone consult with the Dr.'s from Cornell....I just hope someone's dog has come thru this without a transfusion and with Just Meds... Is there a Dr. in the House???? We love him so much..
Thanks,
Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,
A PCV of 7 is extremely low. Why can't you do a transfusion?
Yaz is making few to no red blood cells, and non regenerative anemia can be tricky to resolve.
I urge you to contact Dr Dodds too....
Has Yaz had his thyroid tested? Many non regenerative dogs have done well on thyroid meds - eg. soloxine.
how is Yaz today?

Suzanne, I meant to add that if you can do a transfusion, it would buy you and your vets time to treat Yaz.
Non regenerative dogs can undergo many transfusions before they are stabilised.

Suzanne,

With a PCV of 7 a blood transfusion could be very necessary. Why does it appear that a transfusion is not an option for Yaz?

AIHA/IMHA is a very difficult disease but dogs CAN and DO survive it and go on to live happy healthy lives. If you have not read my Web site on Canine AIHA/IMHA as yet, please do when you can. The URL is:

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

Be sure to follow the links on the bottom of the first page to many other sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the Success Stories pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in terms of treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE. One dog on these pages had a PCV of 3, yes 3 and went on to survive and do very well.

Please know that you and your most beloved Yaz are in my thoughts and prayers during these most very diffcult days.

Juliet has had 3 transfusions and did well after each...she too has non-regenerative IMHA. It has bought her time. I would urge you to e-mail Dr. Dodds and explore a transfusion as a bridge.

Dr. Dodds and I spoke tonight...She seems to think he will fair quite well with Universal Blood..and thyroid meds. A breeder friend of mine is calling her Vet...Looks like I can get him transfused.... God willing he will be ok until the morning!!
Please Keep My Yazzy in your prayers..Me is a puppy mill dog that was rescued when he was 2..He had a tough start..Pray he can live a Long Happy life!!
Thanks,
Suzanne

Suzanne -

I am so sorry for your loss of Yaz. I hope, in time, memories of the time you had with him will help to ease your pain. And, I hope it brings you comfort knowing you saved him from a horrible situation and gave him a loving family for two years. While it wasn't long enough, you gave him a life he NEVER could have had in those conditions.

With sympathy,
Bonnie

Please accept my heartfelt condolences in the loss of your Yaz. Even though your time with him was way too short they were the best two years of his life.

Yaz now has the best seats in the house for those Red Sox games and will always hold a very special place in your heart.

RIP Yaz-you will be greeted at the bridge by many wonderful dogs that have succumbed to this disease before you.

Keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time

Thank you all......Love your babies while they are here...Human and Furry.... Yaz was a puppy mill dog..was mistreated and not loved for the first 2 years of his life...We only had him for 2 years...But it seemed like we were never without him...Last night my son slept downstairs with him..During the middle of the night..He tried to go up stairs to sleep with me..As he has done for 2 years... Now he is hanging with God.....Hey Yaz...tell God that we need More Wisdom...Because there has been too many wonderful Babies lost....and something needs to be done!!
There are no words to explain the shock....Even though I knew he was really bad...and would more than likely pass..... it took 8 days for this to take him... But we will never forget Our Yazzer..Yazzy..YAZ!!!
Suzanne.....Good luck to all of you still dealing with this....It is a never ending battle!!!
