Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Nollaig-thyroxine

Hi everyone

Just to let you know that I eventually got the vet to do a complete thyroid panel for Nollaig and the free T4, the active thyroxine, has come back at the bottom end of the reference range so basically low.
Nollaig has pure red cell aplasia and she will now go on soloxine and this will hopefully stimulate her marrow to produce red cells as well as the imunosuppressants stopping destruction, hopefully! Also hopefully should perk her up a bit.
Her pcv was 34% after her 5th transfusion and she is due to be tested again on Tuesday to see if the danazol is working.
She has been keeping very well, the only problem being a few times she would regurgitate her food and therefore also her pills as they are given after meals. However she would eat it again and I certainly didn't discourage it as I need her to get those pills!!
Rory, her vet advised me to feed her meals over say 5/10 minutes very gradually as he thought the problem could be eating too fast(due to being ravenous with the prednisolone) and therefore the stomach reflex was just forcing it back up.So far it seems to have stopped this regurgitation now.
Please pray that she turns this around as that is nearly 6 months now we have been waiting for a pcv to hold let alone rise but I firmly believe that Nollaig will do it,she will just do it in her own tie as that's her all over no matter what she's doing she is just TOO laid back.I have 9 beagles in total and none of them are as laid back and contented as her she always was even before this disease took hold.

kathleen,

Hopefully the soloxine will help. I have seen it help many dogs with AIHA and even a couple of dogs with PRCA.

Keeping you both you nad Nollaig in my thoughts and prayers.

Great news. I am happy for you.

Hi Kathleen

Thanks for the update - I hope the new drugs will help Nollaig - just a thought, I give Phoebe her meds in extra light dairylea cheese or crunchy peanut butter - the texture is so soft and they are licking so hard to swallow the cheese/peanut butter that the meds just go straight down. I've never had a missed tablet yet!!

Hoping to hear about Nollaig's progress

Kind Regards and Best wishes

Hi Kathleen, I hope the thyroid meds help Nollaig. I have noticed a huge difference with Tessy since she's been put on thyroid meds.

Thoughts and prayers for Nollaig to beat this disease.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes and Gill thanks for the tip with the dairylea light for giving pills, think I will give it a try.
Nollaig has not regurgitated her food/pills last few days now, I think it was she was eating too fast!!

Will let you know how Tusday goes.

Glad to hear Nollaig seems to be doing better and she is managing to keep her food down, sounds like she is heading in the right direction and that makes us really happy.

P. S. my daughter went to school in Glasgow at the Glasgow School of Art, not sure if that is anywhere near you, but we found Scotland to be absolutely beautiful and we hope to get back there someday.
