Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Nollaig improving slowly BUT surely!

Hi everyone

Nollaig's pcv now 21.3% up 2.3% in 3 weeks which for her is fab as she has a very severe form of pure red cell aplasia(one of the rarer and harder to treat forms of AIHA) which did not respond to any of the conventional drugs at all in 7 months or even the desperate attempt by the vet to save her by spaying her 5 months ago as hormones can in some dogs negatively affect them.

Previously, we couldn't even get her pcv to stay the same for one week(dropped 4-5% weekly) let alone increase! So not only is she relacing those red cells that have naturally died off but making additional ones to increase that pcv.

The rate of increases of pcv I'm sure will vary as she increased at least 9% in 2 weeks last time and just 2.3% in 3 weeks this time but I am positive she will continue to be blessed and healed.

I can't get over how healthy her coat looks,I have 9 beagles in total, 8 of whom their coats are in very good condition overall, and Nollaig always had the worst coat, now she has surpassed theirs by a mile! From a very early age it had a dry spiky feeling and dandruffy and always scratching, now it's soft furry silky and so shiny (she is a tricolour and even the white fur has a real shine off it which is harder to see than in black hair).

She's started playing again with her tug a jug toy and her buster cube which are ideal toys, for a hungry little hound, to keep them moving and motivated! She will,I believe, with God's help, not only get her pcv back to normal but her overall health will have improved too.

Thanks for all your continued support and Good Luck to all fighting this disease.

Happy to hear Nollaig is trending upwards. Some dogs just need a lot more time, and it's always wonderful when the light is in their eyes and the spring is back in their step.

We will keep you in our thoughts, way to go sweet Nollaig!

So happy for you Kathleen, What great news after what must seem a lifetime of treatment. A great inspiration for anyone else whose dog has PRCA. You are proving that it can be beaten . It definitely is the hardest form to treat. Julie.

Hi Kathleen

Oh dear, I feel bad now that I have vented about my Riley's results, when I see what you have been through with Nollaig. Im so happy that you are progressing forward with her and that things are going so well - it gives me hope.

Im new to this, so I dont know about the few steps back and few steps forward.

I just want to thank you all for your kind words and support for Nollaig and for myself too.
In particular, I want to give a special thank you to all those who have lost their dogs to this terrible disease and yet still come on here and rejoice in others good news,it is just such a selfless act and really touches my heart.
I pray God comforts you in your sadness and helps you to remember the happy times you shared with your dog.

Take care

Kathleen,
Even though it has been 3 years since I lost my Salome I come here to cheer on every dog because I remember how scary and helpless I felt when I first got the diagnosis. It helped so much to find a place where everyone understood how you were feeling. A place to rejoice and a place to share the pain. It made the journey a lot easier. Hopefully we will see Nollaig on the success story pages one day. Enjoy every single minute with your girl.
