Our 6 year old Sharpei Cagney collapsed yesterday and we had to call out the emergency vet.She is currently in the ER with we are told AIHA. She was treated for a viral infection 3 weeks ago. She has been given oxygen therapy, Saline IV and Plasma expander as her blood was likened to 'red water' We are very undecided what course of action to take, and are in the process of reading all information we can find. We have been encouraged by some of the threads that we have read and it has given us some hope for the future allbeit we are aware a very stressful and difficult time We are awaiting our next Vet call around early evening on the progress of the treatment being given, having had a 'set back' over night. Hopefully our next thread will be more positive Jackie & Allen

Hi Jackie.sorry to hear you have to see Cagney go through this.....you have found a great site here with a lot of people that have gone through the same nightmare that can help and advise. My dog Matilda has also been through it and I posted an update on her a few threads down so you can read her story. Do you have Cagney's blood results? Did they tell you what her PCV was? Have they transfused her? When you get the results them post them on the site. You should also contact Dr Jean Dodds at hemopet@hotmail.com She is based in Los Angeles and is an expert in this field. She is an amazing woman.Email her all the info you can on Cagney. There is also a great lady called Patrice on this site, she is very knowledgeable too. Let us know what the vet says later and don't give up hope, there is a lot that can be done. Keep us posted All the best Lola

Hi Jackie, Very sorry to hear about Cagney. I hope Cagney begins to respond to the meds soon, but it can be a rough few days until they do. I certainly wish you the very best in your fight. Please check out the last couple of threads, as there is advice there on what information you can post that will help. Bloodwork, history, drugs and doses (Cagney's weight), etc. It sounds like the trigger may have been related to the virus, or the anti-viral treatment? It would probably be good to know more about it. Good luck to you both, and I hope to hear good things soon, fingers crossed and praying for Cagney too! Richard & Dylan

Jackie, I am so sorry that Cagney has been diagnosed but you have found an excellent place to learn about this awful disease and ask questions that will help you thru this. Have they started her on any steroids yet? It is very important to have a Vet on board that understands this disease. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Penny

Dear Jacky, I am so sorry that you have to deal with this awful disease and that Cagney is feeling so sick. Please don't give up hope! There are many dogs that have survived! Go to Joanne Dickson's website: http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/index.html You will learn a lot about the disease and also about the treatment options. Make sure to go to the link of the success stories. They will give you hope! It will be a long and rocky road, a roller coaster ride of emotions but the disease can be overcome. Make sure you have a knowledgeable vet on board, maybe you want to consult with a specialist (internal medicine). I also encourage you to contact Dr. Dodds as has already been mentioned. Best wishes, Brigitte
