Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Newly diagnosed pup

Hello all!
My one year old Labradoodle was dignosed a month ago with AIHA. I was devastated but Spencer is doing much better now and the blood count is slowly increasing. He is off the Atopica and still on pred. We will never know the cause! His sister Shelby from the same liter does not exhibit any signs of the disease. My heart goes out to any pet owners dealing with the same thing. My question to everyone is, I don't plan on given Spencer or Shelby vaccinations again just in case it could hinder their immune system. What are your vets telling you? Vaccs or no vaccs?

Shannon,
Read this protocol written by Dr. Jean Dodds, a respected authority on canine vaccinations. Print it out and discuss it with your vet before deciding what you want to do.
My very best to you,
Patrice

Most vets (all that I've talked to) will NOT vaccinate a dog with IMHA/AIHA. As for Shelby, that's a tough call. At the very least you'd want to minimize vaccines, and follow Dr. Dodd's protocols. I certainly wouldn't blame you for choosing not to either. Legally though, rabies is tough to avoid. We're in the process of getting an exception for Slinky (our IMHA dog). My understanding though, is that having the written exception really only protects me, not Slinky. If she were to bit someone, she'd still be impounded, I just wouldn't be hassled about it.

Glad to hear your pup is doing well. No more vaccines for us, period.

Keep us posted, and we're happy that your Spencer is doing so well.

Hi Shannon & Scott,

Thank you for getting in touch and sharing your kind thoughts about Daisy; yes we lost her just 1 week and 1 day ago and yet the pain still remains, she brings tears to my eyes all the time, but im finding it so hard to grieve and show my emotion, I know this is yet to come but when i just dont know, time will only tell. She is home agin with us now, we collected her ashes at the weekend and can finally be at rest with her dad, Oscar, who's ashes we also keep - he died just over 2 years ago to another awfull, tragic disease which we could do anything about, again we were helpless when it came to saving him!!

We were so glad to hear that Spencer is doing well, i couldn't beleive how young he is, that must have come as a terrible shock to you both, you must keep your chins up and think positive. You certainly are lucky, give him much love and as much as you can, which we know you will and treasure the time you have with him, wish we could do the same with our daisy.

I hope you liked the picture i emailed you of Daisy, at least you can now put a face to a name and see just how beautiful she was.
Please stay in touch and let us know the progress with Spencer, wishing you lot's of luck and all our love is sent your way.

Thank you once again for getting in touch, it means soo much to us.

Take care.

All our love,
Claire, Jason, Dan, Jake and our Skye (our other spaniel) xxx
