Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - New thread for Frances

Frances, UK, franmc12@sky.com

My 8 year old yorkshire terrier Jake has just been diagnosed with AIHA. He has been in hospital since last night, and i am devastated. I went to see him today and he looks really bad. The vets still cant get him to eat anything, so he hasn't eat now for 5 days. He is on a drip to put fluids back into him. I've looked at quite a few web sites to get to grip with this illness, and am just praying that he will be alright. I feel as if someone has chopped off my right arm, my friends have good intentions, and have phoned to see how Jake is, but no one no's how upset i feel. I cant sleep and cant stop crying. Just hope i will have my little dog home soon. :-(

Frances,

I am so sorry your little boy is so sick but glad you have found this board. To find out more about AIHA please go the Meisha's Hope website and you will find a wealth of information:
http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/index.html
make sure you visit the success stories, they will give you lots of hope in this difficult time. Make sure your vet is experienced with the disease. It is (luckily) not a very common disease and not every vet has the knowledge to deal with it. Ask the vet and this board a lot of questions! if you know his blood count numbers, post them and it will give a bit of an idea where Jake stands. Have they considered a blood transfusion, what medications is he on?

Don't give up hope and take it one day at a time.
Best wishes,

Brigitte

Dear Frances,
I am so sorry to hear about Jake. I remember vividly how frightened I was when Chance was first sick. I don't think anyone who has not experienced this can imagine how awful it feels.

Please know that, by posting here, hundreds of other dog owners are thinking about you and silently urging Jake to hang in there. Please stay positive for his sake. He can sense it when you are upset and may think you are upset with him.

Please stay here with us so we can help you with all the details about what is happening and what will happen. This will be your family for awhile.

Dear Frances, Im so sorry to hear about your little doggie - wishing you both all the best. You have found a good place for support, emotional and otherwise. Patrice is right, this was my family for a time, and I still come back and visit.

I hear yorkies are tough little doggies.

Hi Frances and Jake,
I am so sorry to hear about Jake, somehow from somewhere you will get the strength to get through this. I do know how awful it is as with most people here, we have been there. 1st March 2010 little Archie was diagnosed and it was nearly a week before he ate, now he is charging round the house after months of being too weak to do anything! Keep looking in on the site and do ask questions, I can't answer them but I have gained so much knowledge from those on this site who do know and will analyse the blood results for you.
