I have not posted in a while in regards to Charlie's continued fight with this disease. In addition to auto immune The vet has concluded he does in fact have lyme disease and that is what started this roller coaster many months ago. He continues to improve and each bi-weekly check up shows wonderful PCV gains. His meds are in full taper mode, now down to the pred every other day, the famotidine (sp?) twice daily and still on the doxy twice a day. all other meds have been tapered and discontinued. Charlie appears to be headed in the right direction, coat is again shiny, has gained weight, some muscle mass has returned and his over all personality seems to be returning to that of his pre-disease state. However, over the last couple of days i have noticed him having a stuffy nose -- no nasal drainage or sneezing just sounds like he is stuffy. his next check up isn't until tuesday but i am going to see if the doc can see him today (they are a 24/7 vet hospital) but in the meantime i wanted to throw it out here and see if anyone has experienced similiar symptoms with their dog ..... thanks

This might be the beginnings of kennel cough. It does start like this. It's usually very mild, and highly contagious, so it could have come from anywhere. I would be extra cautious with contacting other dogs until this has cleared. Be sure that your vet is prescribing 5mg doxycycline per POUND of body weight TWICE daily for at least 8 weeks. This is an aggressive dose intended to eliminate Lyme disease the first time. If it is under-treated, it is possible that it will not be completely eradicated and can re-appear with greater vengeance at a later time. For reference for this dose please see this excellent site: http://sites.google.com/site/blackgsd/treatment my best patrice

Dogs can carry kennel cough even if they don't have the symptoms. So, as Patrice indicated, be careful with letting your pup go nose-to-nose with other pooches at this time. My Lab, Maggie, has contracted kennel cough without encountering a single symptomatic dog. She has a tendency to dig up stray tennis balls which could be coated in all sorts of bacteria.

Thanks for you advice -- i think you are both right now that i think about it,,, we do not have any other dogs here at the farm but he is going to the vet hospital every two weeks -- and since it is an animal ER they have emergency cases come in that might not be a regular patient with a complete vaccination history, it's possible he picked it up there. i will inquire at his check up tomorrow. As for the doxy i will also check that as well. he is on 200mg twice daily and has been for almost 8 weeks now. (you would think that would take care of the kennel cough) His weight was 45lbs but he has since gained some so the dose may have to be adjusted. the doc did say she would not discontinue the doxy until he is off all pred. he is every other day pred now and after tomorrow he should go to every 3rd day pred for 2 weeks.
