Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - new here, diet for AIHA
| My Wylie was diagnosed last week with AIHA. Her PVC was .36 Thursday, Saturday and now .32 today, The started prednizone. I am so lucky to find this wonderful informative site. I have searched high and low and can't find anyhting on what a good diet is for this. The vet hasn't been real helpful. I did start on a cooked homemade diet for liver problem since she was first diagnosed wiht Jaundices a month ago. Its 50% protein, chicken, yogurt or cottage cheese, and eggs for carbs, either potatoes or oatmeal, along with supplements, which now that she has AIHA she should probably stop Any help is appreciated. |

has anyone heard of this, its called Biopreparation, here is a link http://www.optimumchoices.com/ImmuneMediatedHemolyticAnemia-IMHA.htm. I am so confused because I was told to add some liver in her diet, but then doesnt make the jaundice worse? |

| Laurie -- Good luck to you and your Wylie in fighting this disease. I'm hoping some of our folks here on the forum who have used special diets will chime in. Dr. Jean Dodds, who has consulted on many cases on the forum, has a recommended diet. You might want to search on her name to see if that brings up nutrition information. I'll keep you and Wylie in my prayers. |

| Hi there: My vet recommended Herring and Sweet Potato by California Natural. You can get this at most "health" pet food stores or you may have to order it online. Petsmart or Petco doesn't carry it that I know of. You might want to occassionally try lean roast beef (arby's in your area?) or lean chicken breast. Protein is good for this disease. One thing my vet told me was to consider mixing her regular food with a 1/2 cup to a cup of puppy chow. Although that is more fattening, it will offer the additional protein he/she needs.
