Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - new choice for heartworm prevention w/aiha

We had our one month check up yesterday - our pcv is holding at 40! addressed the issue of vaccines/deworming/fleas/heartworm prevention etc. we were told never to vaccinate or deworm again as it might cause a relapse. this left us un protected for heartworms, very scary! with everything holding steady we are trying a product i did not know about until now -- advantage multi -- it protects against fleas, ticks and heartworms and also whipworms, hookworms, round worms etc. it is topical and does not have to be ingested which was our issue -- there is a chance of skin irritation (goes on the back like other spot flea products) so far he is good and he has very sensitive skin!! just wanted to pass this info along! we are still a no go for any vaccinations so socially we will have to always be careful against possible exposure to sick animals.... but i am just relieved to find a heartworm prevention that is topical!! didn't know they existed!

I've continued to give Maggie her monthly Frontline Interceptor tablets orally, only every six weeks. I don't see this as being equal to vaccines as the heart worm prevention is not supposed to tweek the dog's immune system, just interfere with the larvae worms' neurotransmission.

I agree with Robert. I have continued to give Henri Sentinel about every 6-weeks, even after his vaccine-induced IMHA onset. I have had no problems (knock on wood) with this med. When necessary, I add a topical flea med in. I have OK'ed every med with Dr Dodds. Vaccines and flea meds work differently.
Happy Holidays!!

According to everything I have research, heartworm meds can compromise the immune system, the ones that have all th other dewormers in them and we think, vet included it was the Heartworm Plus that caused Wylie to relapse. This is the "plus" I am talking about that kills the other worms besides heartworm. Since she has been on interceptor, which is just heartworm prevention we have had no problems.

this crazy disease seems to be just as tricky to diagnose as it is to treat as it is to protect from relapse. we used to use interceptor prior to our ordeal but cannot now. thank goodness there are options out there and great vets that can customize a program for each individual dog -- we are all counting our "recovery" blessings this Christmas season. Merry Christmas!
