Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - New AIHA/IMHA MAF Veterinary Student

I just thought I would mention that info about the latest veterinary student scholar (VSS) study funded by the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at Morris Animal Foundation is now online at the MAF Web site: Here is a copy and paste of that info from the MAF Web site:

Examining Blood Clotting in Dogs with Immune-mediated Hemolytic Anemia
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (iMhA) is the most common type of anemia in dogs. This deadly blood disorder occurs when something triggers a dog’s body to attack its own red blood cells. Despite aggressive immunosuppressive therapy, this disease has a very high mortality rate, and most dogs die shortly after diagnosis. A large number of dogs suffering from iMhA die of blood clots rather than from the anemia itself. The student scholar aims to understand the composition of hemoglobin, blood and plasma levels that cause these blood-clotting complications in dogs with iMhA. The results could help prevent clots and improve survival.

Principal Investigator: Erin McQuinn, Colorado State University

Fully Sponsored: Meisha's Hope

Study ID: D09CA-601

Last year the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at MAF sponsored 3 VSS studies.

I beleive that Veterinary Student scholar studies are so important because they get vet students interested in reseach while they are still in veterinary school. We need more vets to go into research so they can help us find answers to the many questions that surround canine AIHA/IMHA.

In addition to the VSS Studies the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at MAF is continuing to fund other studies, including one at Cornell that is continuing for another year+ and another at Colorado State Univeristy that is also working at gaining a better understading on the formation of thrombosis in dogs with AIHA/IMHA. This study started in March of 2010.

If you want to help in the fight against AIHA/IMHA please donate to the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at MAF. You can learn more about the fund at the Web page:

I meant the title of this thread to read New AIHA/IMHA MAF Veterinary Student Scholar Study, but I clicked enter too fast.

Also at the MAF Web site you can read about the VSS study award winners from last year:

The Award money for these students does NOT come from current donations but from a fund that was established a long time ago by one family to award outstanding veterinary students for their research. Way to go veterinary Students. We need so many more of them going into research

I saw the news at the MAF site. That is great that there is a developing interest in continuing studies for this "rare" disease. Hopefully their research will unlock more clues into saving all animals diagnosed with this awful disease and educating all Vets that it is not an automatic death sentence. Thank you Meisha's Hope and MAF for making this happen.
