Its Saturday evening here, a week tonight since taking Riley to the emergency clinic for pancreatitis. Tonight I was outside with both the dogs, and Riley has been quite good considering, has been outside with us today, wandering around, barking at birds at passers by - then he had a bowel movement and of course I always check - I found blood - bright red - does that mean he still has some inflammation there, or is he bleeding internally? Gums and tongue are relatively pink - no bruising on his body. Next vet appointment is Monday evening for a blood count. The emergency clinic reduced the azathioprine to half a tablet every second day. I have given him some Carafate in a slurry.

Now I feel silly - Ive had this problem before and posted about it, except that last time I thought it was minestrone, now Im sure it is blood. Perhaps my request for advice should be "how does one delete a thread?"

Silka, that's scary. I hope you get some answers. Hopefully it's just his bum that's irritated, and nothing internally. How does the urine look? Keep us posted, hoping it's something minor. melissa and tiggs

Silka, Glad to hear that Riley's out and about, enjoying the fall weather. Sounds like he's made a nice recovery from the pancreatitis. I'm sorry that I can't give you any advice about the blood in his stool except to say that I'd definitely have him checked out by a vet. In the meantime, perhaps a bland diet would be best??? Hopefully someone who's more knowledgable will chime in soon. Take care, Karen

Silka, Bright red blood in stool indicates that it comes from the colon or the end of the gastrointestinal tract before exiting the body. Internal blood will become dark, almost coffee grind color, by the time it reaches the colon. So my guess is something sharp in the stool or a fistula that is bleeding. Dogs can be like garbage disposals and eat all kinds of stuff they shouldn't. I would check carefully for a few days and if you see nothing else, not worry. One of the reasons I use veggies in my homemade mix is because it adds a bit of roughage to the diet and wraps around junk like this. my best patrice

Silka, I totally agree with Patrice as far as our pups can be human garbage disposals, at least I know our Holly is. About a month ago Holly had problems with hives, vomiting, blood in stool etc, never figured out what it was exactly must have eaten something that we never saw even though we monitor her very carefully. Cost us $350 at the vet, gave us some stuff for allergy and within a week all back to normal. UGH! Just keep very close watch on it. Linda

Thanks everyone - I do have Riley on a bland diet which I am homecooking, and it does include lots of vegetables - today was a much better day as far this was concerned. Vet tomorrow again, so Ill check that as well. Im glad your dog is ok Linda, some of these things are a puzzle indeed. Yes Riley is doing ok after this last episode, but sometimes one has to wonder about things - they shaved his front leg to put the drip in - he does look like a pretend poodle with all the shaved bits, but now has a red band on this leg which obviously irritates him so he licks it. Hey Karen! It is Spring here in Oz. :)
