HI Sam others will be better able to offer advice here and it will be invaluable. I just want to offer prayers, hugs and all the support you can imagine as you and Jack face this consuming process. Please come back often and share as there is no better place to find comfort and hope as you tread the difficult path of AIHA. Love Jack with all you have and cherish every minute, knowing you will ALWAYS be making the best decision you can with what you know at the time. You are already a great dad because you are seeking information and support and doing everything you can for you best friend. Be sure to go to Joann's website, Meisha's Hope. www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson God Bless sharon

I'm sorry to hear about Jack, but there is a wealth of support and information here and hopefully it will help give you some insight. What kind of dog is Jack? What are his PCV counts? Has your vet discussed the possiblity of a blood transfusion, which if his PCV is low enough, would potentially buy him some time while the immonusuppressive drugs take hold? Most importantly, don't give up hope. Sometimes when they seem like they won't make it another night, they pull through. Arm yourself with knowledge and make sure you have a great vet who has experience with IMHA. Keep us posted on Jack, and our thoughts will be with you. Do, as Sharon sais, visit Joanne's website, Meisha's Hope. It's a wonderful resource. melissa and tiggs

Sam, I am so sorry to hear about what is happening to Jack. This is very frightening when it happens. You are with many people here who have survived the first weeks and have found great hope. Please come back frequently during the day to read posts. Can you tell me what you mean by "his spleen had gone down?" Do you mean it was enlarged and it reduced in size? The spleen can sometimes be enlarged in this condition and has been identified as a source of destruction not only for red blood cells but also platelets (the part of the blood that provided clotting). Occasionally a vet will feel they need to remove the spleen in order to stop this destruction. It's important to remember that this is a complex surgery for the dog. If your dog is very sick now, it might be too stressful to have a surgery. Come back and tell us a little more about what is happening. When you say 19 tablets a day, do you mean they are giving your dog doxycycline? That antibiotic is often given in large doses if there is a possibility of exposure to a tick disease. Is this what happened? I am thinking about you tonight and hoping things have improved for Jack. my best patrice
