Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - My Pup Bentley is Getting Better

I thought it was time to start a new thread too, Sharon!! LOL

Maybe its my imagination, but Mr. B sure does seem lots better this morning (Wed, Jul 20) He is happy, barking, begging for food, and seems very content. We've shared lots of great hugs and puppy kisses, and he's even "fussed" at his brother and sister pups, which he hasn't done in a LONG time!

I looked back over his records, and recognized that at his last CBC (Jul 15) his Absol Reti were finally over 100.0 for the first time since this all started....maybe the meds really are starting to kick in. I sure hope so :)

Anyway, his beef is boiled, the chicken is cooking now, and he is snoozing on the cool tile. For today anyhow, Bentley is better.

Y'all are the best....thank you all sooooo much for everything!!

Hi Sally
I am happy to read that Mr B is feeling better today. Its amazing how we can find joy in barking and begging when they have been so sick.
I teared up the first time Ginger played again with my other dogs after being so sick.

Tell Mr B to keep up the good work and thanks for the wonderful update!

i'm so glad to hear that! and i know what you both mean about finding joy in things our dogs used to normally do that we take for granted.. i cried today when lola tried to horse around with me for the first time since shes been sick. it crazy how these pups know just how to tug at our heart strings.

Hi Sally,

Great news for Bentley and hopefully plenty more of those great moments in the future too.

I certainly cherish every moment with Dylan and everything she does. We celebrated our 4 month anniversary of her second life with AIHA yesterday along with my two youngest dog's second birthday. AIHA not only taught me to appreciate everything Dylan does, but everything I do with all of my dogs and all of my friends and all of my family. Life can change so suddenly it seems. Enjoy every moment you can, especially the little things.

Cheers to you and Bentley,

Richard and Dylan

Sally,

Hoping today finds Bentley even better! I always found that when Beau really got into it with my GSD Chloe, that was the ultimate barometer of how good he was feeling!

With that said -- while it is still way too early for this to be considered -- keep in mind that as time goes on and you have Bentley's PCV checked, get CBC's done as well so you can keep an eye on possible damage from the prednisone dosage. Beau went for months and months on high doses of pred, all the while seemingly fine, until a random CBC showed drastically high liver enzymes (example - his alk phos, which I think is supposed to be no higher than about 131 or 161, was up to 11,953!). It was at this point that his PCV was dropping for what the vet thought was no apparent reason and his downturn started. Switching to the internal med specialist saved his life and his liver damage is reversing (latest alk phos was around 1,000 so we're getting there!).

Moral of the story -- all may appear great but after an extended period on the meds, it may not be so. While this crash and burn was occurring, Beau was still eating and playful.

Don't mean to scare you or take away from the absolute feeling of elation that Bentley is turning a corner. Just want you to learn from my mistakes.

Thanks, guys, for all the good wishes!

I am excited that he seems to have more energy....a tiny bit less today, but still much improved. I am, however, aware of the potential side of the prednisone, and will be asking the vets at LSU tomorrow when they foresee beginning to reduce it. Mr. B hasn't stabilized at all so far, so I'm not sure we're there yet....Tomorrow he will have another CBC at LSU, and his internist will see him, so I'll see what she says. He also sees our regular vet on Friday...Two for one day!! LOL

Thanks, Sharon, and everyone else who've reminded me that these drugs, while necessary to help the body fight IMHA, also have devastating effects of their own. It doesn't scare me or rain on the parade....I appreciate you sharing the info so I'm better prepared to face what's next!

Big HUGS from Sally and Bentley

Sally,
I am so happy you could see the "old" Bentley. Too often we get where we can only see the toll of the drugs and disease. Keep up the good work Mr. B!
