Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - My beloved Maggie

I am so glad that I found this forum...with tears streaming down my face, I can hardly see to type. My 9 year old Cocker and best friend, Maggie, was diagnosed with AIHA a few days ago. Her red blood cell count was 26, so they sent us home with prednisone. A few days later, Maggie wouldn't eat, was getting weaker, so we took her back to the vet. She sent us to emergency, as her blood count was now down to 10. She had a blood transfusion yesterday, but so far, her red blood count is only up to 19. She's also getting injectable prednisone. The doctor wants to keep her over one more night to see how she is doing in the morning. I'm scared...I don't know if she'll make it, but I'm also deeply worried about the cost. My family and I are on a very limited budget and the $1200 so far that we have spent is money we don't have. I'm also concerned over many of the posts that I have read that should Maggie pull through, the cost will keep escalating with meds, frequent blood work-ups, etc. I am having to deal with the guilt of not being able to help her as much as I'd like, due to the cost. Please pray for Maggie, my family and me. I truly don't know what we will do. God Bless.

Just wanted to mention - our vet took CareCredit
http://www.carecredit.com/paymentplans.html - this is a no interest credit card used only for medical care - pets and humans. The payments and length of interest free time are determined by the amount of the bill. I believe your vet has to be participating - but it may be worth checking out. We used it for Sadie our 3 1/2 yr old cocker spaniel when she was diagnosed with AIHA. It has been a great break from having to pay the bill all in full. Especially since we unfortunately lost Sadie.

Patty,
I am so sorry that you have had to join us but you have come to the right place for support. Please don't beat yourself up because of your finances. You can only do what you can and there are no guarantees that you can beat it even if you have unlimited finances.
I am sure Maggie knows that you are going to do everything that you can and knows how much you love her.
Take care
