| Lisa Kusick, Escondido,CA, kusick@cox.newt We have a German shepard dog that the vet wants to put on cyclosporine for anal fissures (?sp) and the cost would be $200.00 for two weeks. We want to know if the human brand Neoral would be the same medication and would this work for our dog? |

| Yes. They are both made by the same company. Atopica is cyclosporine manufactured in capsules specifically dosed for veterinary use. Neoral is the same, cyclosporine and marketed for human use. I imagine that they went through different testing depending on the recipient, but in essence they are the same. If a vet would be dispensing the Neoral, then the dosing should be virtually identical, but the delivery system may be different. Some folks have been able to get Neoral through pharmacies like Walgreens for a significantly less cost. Do not use any name or generic version of Sandimmune if you can avoid it. It is a different potency of cyclosporine and is not equivalent to Neoral or Atopica. If that is all you can get, be sure your vet knows how to dose this version correctly. If the anal fissures are part of an autoimmune condition (like allergies) then it's possible it will work very well. my best patrice |
