Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Mitch - 15th March

Since I posted last week Mitch took a rather severe downward turn. His PCV crashed to 12 this weekend (had been stable 25ish for months). Thyroid also showed low T4 but not others (T3, TSH)? - was told something about effect of meds on T4. Too focussed on the poor PCV to think too much about the thyroid to be honest.

Tomorrow we are referred back to the vet hospital where he will no doubt recieve a blood transfusion- long term prognosis not looking good at all but everyday is a blessing.

Kath,

My prayers are with you and Mitch. It is a terrible ordeal to go thru, believe me, I know. Take care and keep positive.

Kath,

I'm so so sorry to hear that! My Brinnie was just recently diagnosed (last Thursday) and we went back today and she was still at 19 on her PCV. This disease is awful! It stinks that you do the treatments and there are no guarantees. I pray that the transfusion works. Did they say if they got the thyroid functioning better if that would help?

I will pray for you and Mitch. Keep us posted!

So sorry to hear about little Mitch,I hope they will do the transfusion for him. The fact the thyroid level is low T4, yes it could be down to meds, however doesn't matter the reason, the fact is his thyroid needs to be working at its utmost in order to produce red cells. So definitely get him started on soloxine right away,it stimulates the marrow to produce red cells(even the small amount of Mitch's marrow that is still functioning.)
It certainly wont do any harm but it might do him good and Dr Dodds has proved the connection between thyroid and red cell production.Even Nollaig's specialist doesn't believe the soloxine is helping but I am adamant that she remains on it.Her pcv is 26% now highest it has been since illness started(apart from post transfusion).

Let us know how he gets on.

Thinking of you both...

Kath,

I am so sorry Mitch is still not feeling better. I would make certain he is put on Thyroid medication. When Kahlu was put on it,(on Dr. Dodds recommendation) it was the turnaround point, for him to get into the mid 40s in his HTC.
I will be thinking of you and Mitch, best wishes,

So sorry to hear of this recent setback Kath. I wonder what caused the PCV to crash like it did. Did all the other numbers drop as well?

I agree with adding the soloxine to the med schedule.
I'll keep Mitch in my thoughts and prayers.
