Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Missy diagnosed last week - heartbroken

I'm very happy I stumbled across this board. My cocker spaniel mix, Missy, (she's four) was just diagnosed last monday with canine AIHA. She's on 20 mg of Pred twice a day plus one tablet of Aziaprapine (sp). For two days straight, her pcv jumped 2 points in value (getting up to 26 from 22). On Friday, it was 25.4. i'm getting her pvc checked again tomorrow (monday) and i'm praying it has jumped back up a little.

i know recovery times vary, but i'd be interested to know some of your experiences in terms of how long it took your dogs to respond to the medication. god knows, this is an emotionally draining experience, especially when we love our animals so much. any advice welcome - we're all in this together! -angel

Angel,

I am so very sorry to hear that your most beloved Missy has recently been diagnosed with AIHA.

If you have not read my Web site on AIHA/IMHA as yet, you might want to do so when you can. The URL is

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

Be sure to follow the links on the first page to many other sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the Success Stories pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in terms of treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE.

AIHA/IMHA is indeed a difficult disease but dogs CAN and DO survive it and go on to live happy healthy lives. Be assured that you and your dear Missy are in my thoughts and prayers during these most difficult days.

It sounds like your diagnosis for Missy came quicky with a pretty high PCV (some will describe PCV inital levels down in the 7-9 range). Keep hope. THis site has been very helpful to me. I never wanted to be so knowledgable about this disease...but for my dog Trooper to survive is SO important to us. One day at a time.

Angel -- I'm so sorry about Missy. My cocker, Penny, was diagnosed in October. She had a pcv of 6. It took a full week of hospitalization and several transfusions before we saw an improvement. It has now been 6 months, and she are almost off of the medications, feeling much more like herself. I think the thing that helped me most during the crisis was the vet's assurance that she wasn't in pain. Hang in there and take it one day at a time. Christine

Sorry to hear about Missy. I'm glad you've got brilliant vet. Ours is good, but Holly diagnosed on Thursday has been rushed to Bristol University Hospital for sick animals.
Her pcv was 8.7 yesterday. She is also suffering from jaundice and is a "butter yellow". Eyes, ears, gums, skin - everywhere. Not eaten since Friday and today the vet in Bristol said she has a small clot in her spleen. She is on Pred and asprin. They have also put in a line for a blood replacement (not blood, but something that imitates the haemoglobin so she has more oxygen circulating). Her heart rate has decreased slightly today. thank goodness. but.. I want so much for her to live. She's my shadow at home.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else experienced jaundice in their dog.
