Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Millie - Good News!

Thank you all for your helpful and kind comments - I am sorry to hear about the recent dogs who've lost their fights and pray for the doggie moms too. I decided not to beg God last night before going to sleep I decided I'd leave things in his hands this time to decide what to do - I was too exhausted to be honest with it all - I decided to let him decide Millie's fate and I'd accept it. I rang the vet this morning and spoke to the veterinary nurse - she told me she'd heard Millie's name spoken so knew she was still with us! That gave me some hope - then the vet rang a bit later to say she could be discharged! Her blood levels were good even up a bit after last week, and apparently she was even eating etc. We think perhaps she had caught a bug whilst scavenging when I took her for a walk last Tuesday. The vet said I've to add another pepcid(Losec I think she said) like tablet for a month - just to make sure it wasn't the steriods. I'm going to collect her shortly. So I'm tentatively optimistic for now. The vet and I have decided we'll only make a decision if she crashes down again on the blood side of things which is what I was thinking that would happen at some point but for now that is OK. I think we'll take one day at a time again for now. I hope she wags her tail a little when she sees me. I want everyone to know I'm writing this a little subdued and cautious but we all know not to get too optimistic with this disease - I know you all understand.

Clare and family.

Clare, what great news about Millie. There is really no place like home for our doggies. You had commented in an earlier thread that Millie isn't the same dog she used to be - not energy wise. I suspect it is the high dose of prednisone that she is taking. When she gets to a point where you are able to reduce it, the "old Millie" will re-emerge.

But for now, so happy for you both. Thanks for the update.

Clare:

Great news about Millie! All we can do is take it one day at a time and enjoy each moment we have with our beloved dogs. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Oh Claire, I am so happy for you, hopefully it was just a blip and Millie will soon start to show signs of getting better. I was dreading opening the site tonight, I feel for everyone on here that has either lost a beloved pet or is battling the disease right now. As you say, one day at a time. x

All the best

Clare,

Wonderful news that this was just a passing bug. I guess dogs who have this disease are more suspectible to tummy upsets and infections. My little girl likes to scavenge, too. She snorts around all over the place like a pig and there's just no stopping her.

I hope that Millie is wagging her tail and home with her mom real soon.

Clare -- glad to hear that things are better for you and Millie, and that she can come home. Just having her home and feeling better will help brighten your spirits. I'm hoping this was just a blip -- although it scared you terribly -- and that Millie will be restored to stronger health.

Clare,
So happy to hear about Millie. One thing this disease does it always keep you on your toes worrying about them. Like I said Holly has pretty much the same thing happen to her, early this year, but did bounce back from it within weeks, but still a very scary thing when it happens.
